I guess you can't really argue with the results, if one accepts that recruits who committed soon after MM were influenced positively by the experience.
I'm curious how folks who have been to other schools' Midnight Madness festivities would compare them to Georgetown's. I am certainly in agreement with RDF to the extent that the way the school pulls off MM is very "Georgetown"--there's just something unique about the High School gym, all-student group performance lineup (yes, yes, I know--I have the Bubba Sparxxx poster in my living room), DJ's spinning Top 40 R&B and rap hits at 150 decibles so a bunch of rich white girls can dance badly, and the entire parking lot thing--it's just something that the school and its students have claimed as their own.
I see it as loving Georgetown's Midnight Madness the way one loves their first car--that old station wagon you were handed down from your older sister. It has 120,000 miles on it, the A/C doesn't work half the time, it's got wood panels, it handles a little clunky, the radio plays Bubba Sparxxx, but sonofagun if it didn't make it all the way across the country on that roadtrip and it was dependable even if it seemed on the verge of breaking down and looked a little old next to your friends' new luxury SUV or Honda Civic.

DFW is CLUELESS. First off--what is the title of this thread? Midnight Madness. Last time I checked--this thread was referring to the importance of Midnight Madness and what positives it does for BASKETBALL RECRUITING--or does it help the academics? I mean some of the responses around here don't reflect the intelligence of Georgetown alums or the basic common sense it takes to figure out what is topical and what isn't. Having this come from a guy who runs a site that only has traffic because of the basketball program--I'd think he'd understand--but I guess not.

I think there was a difference of opinion about what "basketball school" means, and then egos got involved. "Basketball school" can mean two things. It can mean that basketball is far and away our most important sport, or it can mean that we're a diploma mill for basketball players. I think we all agree that we're the former, not the latter.

Having this come from a guy who runs a site that only has traffic because of the basketball program--I'd think he'd understand--but I guess not. I have nothing against Midnight Madness. But perhaps some on the board have adopted an orthodoxy that any questioning of men's basketball is now politically incorrect. Yes, I dispute the term "basketball school" much as I dispute Nike--which is only opinion and nothing more. I also contend that Georgetown spends too much on men's basketball and invests too little in it. So before RDF and MCI send letters to Bernard Muir to revoke my season tickets, they ought to give some thought to the concept, agreeable or not, before shooting the messenger. To me, a "basketball school" is a place that focuses all its energy on basketball . Gonzaga is a textbook example, Xavier another. I do not want to see Georgetown aspire to be marginalized, academically or athletically, under the misplaced idea that basketrball is not only the big ship in the harbor, it is the harbor, or if athletic resources are being directed outside basketball, basketball must somehow suffer as a result. This is the mindset of a basketball school and one which need not be part of the discussion at Georgetown, where the other 28 sports are not some sort of impediment to basketball's happiness and security. N.B.:Oh, and as someone who has seen the site stats, I can say with authority that while basketball draws a lot of visits, it is by no means exclusive. Last I checked, about 82% of site traffic to HoyaSaxa.com is basketball, about 16% football, and 2% misc.

This is the mindset of a basketball school and one which need not be part of the discussion at Georgetown, where the other 28 sports are not some sort of impediment to basketball's happiness and security. First of all please stop exaggerating my role in this discussion. Next I'm not suggesting you don't have a right to have your view on this issue; I just disagree with it. I know you were kidding about the letter to Muir comment but seriously if I was going to do that I would have done so after that immature stunt following the Davidson loss (if you were to blame for that ) in which this message board put up a tacky sign to further get some kicks into a team that was likely already feeling low enough after the defeat. In my opinion your point about what makes particular universities basketball or football schools is off the mark. Being a basketball or a football school does not EVER mean the school only cares or invest in just one of those sports exclusively. Instead the terms represent a school's athletic identity. Last time I checked Ohio State pours a lot of money into basketball and other sports. But it still sees itself as a football school (now whether its academics suffer because of the emphasis on sports at that university is a debate for another day). I think my point and RDF's point is that Gtown's athletic identity, from both inside and outside the Gtown community, is as a basketball school. Some loyal supporters of the other Gtown sports may disagree with this or even hate this fact, but it is what it is. When the media talks about basketball schools Gtown fits that description no matter how badly the university may invest in the basketball program. When the media talks about football schools they are referring to universities that have forged their athletic identities on the game of football (therefore Texas will always be a football school no matter all the money being thrown to its basketball program these days). Yes, we know how badly funded Gtown sports are. You have done a good job of educating all of us about this issue. But it has nothing to do with the discussion Fair enough?
