ShamRockFest tomorrow. Flogging Molly, around 7:20. Gonna be great as always. This'll be third time I've seen 'em in DC, probably 10th (counting several Warped Tours) overall. Good times, that band.

Ozomatli at 9:30 last night. Very fun show. They are a latin, jazz-ish band and are good performers. They had one of the guys from Jurassic 5 with them last night - the one with the deep voice, can't remember his name right now. They are from LA and come around DC once or twice a year. Playing somewhere in Baltimore tonight. Chali 2na? He used to be with the band with his J5 DJ, Cut Chemist. I didn't know he was touring with them again.

I liked Shamrockfest better when it was a block party on the streets of Ballston. But I suppose it outgrew that a couple of years ago. Not to mention that the Arlington Five-O are about the most difficult group to deal with that you can imagine. Too dangerous for them to go south of Rte. 50 and take on MS-13, so they make life difficult for yuppie alcoholics instead. (The above is a bit tongue in cheek; I know some guys on that force and they are nice guys, but as a whole, they're still a much bigger pain to deal with than, say, DC police.)

Saw Less Than Jake last night at Rams Head in Bmore. Ive seen them four or five times and i think this was the best show of them all. Their set was extra long and the guys are still on top of their game as showmen. They seem to give it more energy and have more fun on stage as they get older. Chris (lead singer) was talking about his up coming divorce all night (he claimed that he got served with the papers on stage the night before in Norfolk, but who knows if that is true). They also kept the bar open until 2 so the band could hang out and get plastered with fans.
The opening bands were the Flatliners and the Expendables. The Flatliners are awesome. They are a little like the Suicide Machines. They are a group of young kids from Canada and have tons of energy. Highly recommend them. The Expendables were a let down. They were kind of like Pepper (who is very similar to sublime) but more like peppers more recent albums which are more rocky. These guys were laying down these Neo Classical five minute guitar solos in the middle of a traditional ska song. It was like watching Sublime with Stevie Vie playing guitar, but totally forgettable.

Some recents I haven't posted about:
Ting Tings at 930 Club (2nd time seeing them there).
- This band is just plain F-U-N fun. I'm not going to say their music is really ingenious or anything, but it is infectious and they are getting really good live. The first time, I saw them, they were a little tentative, but this time they were a lot more comfortable with the set and playing around with the songs a lot more.
Glasvegas at Black Cat.
- I'm sure Glasvegas is not for everyone. I described on Facebook at "Joy Division-like Scottish dirges that make you want to shoot yourself."
Luckily for me, I happen to love that sort of thing. They've also been compared as a derivative, poor man's Jesus & Mary Chain.
The show wasn't outstanding and Black Cat isn't the best place for live music (not the best acoustics), but it was still very good.
I recommend both to anyone if either of these are coming to your town.
Hoping to catch Mates of State and Black Kids at 930 next weekend.

I saw Left Over Crack there (anarchist punk squatters who do lots and lots of crack and cause riots). The black cat was the right place to see them, 930 might not work for such a violent show

The Clapton/Winwood show sounds like a winner to me!
Just saw legendary pianist McCoy Tyner, who appeared with equally legendary alto saxophonist Gary Bartz, at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda. McCoy is old, and in frail health. Fortunately, his music is as healthy and vibrant as ever. Excellent show!

Cut Copy last weekend at Terminal 5 in NYC...awesome. Lots of energy. Great show. Grrr...had tickets to the show at the Granada Theater in Dallas last month and had to bail at the last minute. I keep hearing great things about the live show, so I'll have to catch the next tour. Thinking about going to see 2 Austin bands (The Wooden Birds and Lymbyc Systym) at the Mercury Lounge in NYC next weekend. Excited about the artists, but I'm also wanting to check out what I hear is a cool venue -- anyone care to comment?

I think I'm going to see Mates of State next weekend at 9:30. w00t! Any review on MOS/Black Kids live show? They are in Boston tomorrow night, and it is an effort to get out to see a concert on a Tuesday night these days, but I am definitely down with the Mates. I have never listened to Black Kids and all I really know about them is their Pitchfork 0.0 review hullabaloo.

I wanted to go, but I had a birthday thing that night I couldn't get out of, so I missed it too.
I am bummed. This is the second time I have missed MOS. I like Black Kids too, but that's who I really wanted to see.
FWIW, Jack, Mates of State are pretty routinely praised for doing very good live shows. I didn't see a whole lot of feedback on the 930 Club message board, but what was there basically boiled down to: Mates of State were excellent, Black Kids were okay.

Peter Bjorn and John? - Thoughts? They are playing @ Webster Hall and I have been hearing buzz about them. I checked out their myspace and I don't really get it. I think it is a sign that
I think that I am getting too old for trendy groups.

So I did end up checking out Mates of State and Black Kids at Boston's new House of Blues, and it was generally worth the time and effort.
Mates of State were very good- they played almost everything of Re-arranger plus some selected older songs and they were accompanied by two talented multi-instrumentalists who primarily played violin and cello but also added percussion, guitar, and even trombone to certain songs. The music was good, and the crowd was not clearly paying attention, but it was not a really "fun" crowd in terms of dancing/participation. It was a Tuesday night and the band does not really inspire the hard-partying crowd, so I guess that is understandable.
Black Kids came on second, and while their songs were ok and they attempted to up the party vibe, I found their lead singer, how should I say, a bit Massengill-y. He kind of giggled when he spoke to the crowd and seemed very proud of himself, meanwhile half of the crowd was leaving during their set (including me). I was not inspired to download their album from what I saw.
As for the venue, I like it, but I think it would be more fun at a better-attended show. It is all general admission and standing room, with bars ringing the lower lever and good sightlines to the stage, plus two balconies, neither of which was open that night but both of which also had bars. It is a huge improvement on the theater style places like the Orpheum with similar capacity, and they even had someone circulating through the crowd to sell beers on the floor. A show like the Drive-By Truckers/Hold Steady double bill would have been pretty great to see there. It is kinda like the 9:30 Club only easier to get a drink and in a much better location (right behind Fenway Park). I am hoping to catch the National there in about a month, and hoping for a better crowd on a Saturday night.

Drummer Ronnie Burrage, in a quartet setting at An die Musik in Baltimore. Pianist was a gentleman named Delmar Brown, who manned that chair in a great jazz funk band called Ghetto Mysticism in Boston in the '70's when I was in college. Enjoyed reminiscing with Delmar on those days of our youth.
The principal solo voice was harmonica player Greg Maret. I was blown away! Dude can really play. One rarely thinks of harmonica as a lead instrument, especially in a jazz setting. But this guy is truly outstanding. He played several different types of harmonicas, one of which must have been two feet long! Though I did not realize it at the time, Maret appears on a CD by Me'Shell NdegeOcello which I own. When I got home, I looked it up. Same cat. As it turns out, Maret has guested on dozens of albums. An outstanding evening of music.

I saw Fall Out Boy on saturday. It was outrageous. the crowd was 89% 13 year old girls and Fifty Cent was there. Pete Wentz was dressed as a combo of Chuck Bass (from gossip girl) and Hitler, and after each song he gave a little speech about Corporate greed, but all i could think about was how he was charging me $50 for this crap. There was also some kind of video (that was unwatchable from the lawn at merriweather) that was probably about greed of somekind.
he then told us 2008 was the best year ever because: 1) "we got the cowboy out of the office" (ughhh) 2) Micheal Jackson has announce a world tour and 3) Blink-182 was getting back together (to which the 13 year old girls responded by screaming their heads off, although when Blink broke up those girls were 9 and something tells me they werent fans in fourth grade).
I did notice that he did NOT say 2008 was great because he got married and had his first child, but those kinds of things are not valued by hipsters so it is what i should have expected.
All in all it was a ridiculous show that I (all 21 years of me) felt old at, which is stupid. The music was average and Pete Wentz was a bad word for cat. Would I go again? No, but I am happy i went. The concert also confirmed my feelings that out door pavilions are the worst place to see a rock show unless its classic rock and you are surrounded by 60 year olds who are too busy smoking pot to dance.
