The opener for U2 this past Saturday was Interpol. I was really hoping to enjoy them. It was alright. The vocals for every song never deviated beyond the same 5 notes. The new band I most want to see is Everything Everything. Absolutely love the album Man Alive. Curious how they would sound live. Interpol's new music definitely suffers from the absence of Carlos D. I'm not too sorry I ended up giving them a pass a couple weeks ago at 9:30 Club. As much as I've always enjoyed their Joy Division-derivative sound, all accounts I heard was that the show was pretty uninspired and blah. Re: Everything Everything. Don't feel too strongly about them one way or the other, but am I the only one noticing that the hot new thing with indie and alternative bands the past few years is falsetto male lead singers? What the hell is up with that, man? Adele's got a deeper voice than most of these cats. Exhibit A: Vinyl Jacket (who sounds like a combo of Everything Everything mixed with Vampire Weekend--which is a great thing in my opinion)

I saw the Decemberists last night at a small venue in Austin (roughly 2,000 people if that). The setlist was truly a bucket list of their tracks, including Engine Driver, Sons & Daughters, Mariner's Revenge Song, We Both Go Down Together, and O Valencia! Still, the show never really seemed to lift off, and Colin Meloy did not do himself any favors with somewhat grating jokes on the mic. I thought most of the tracks sounded better on MP3 and probably will not see this band again live, despite their talent.

I'm seeing Robert Randolph and the Family Band in Dewey next week. Should be fantastic.

Erasure at 930 Club was outstanding last night. Anyone in the DC area who has not seen them before (or even if you have), I'd strongly consider going to the second show tonight, which I believe is not sold out.
Of course, Vince Clarke is my hero, so I'm biased.
But they're still spot on with all their songs and their new stuff is really good too.
And for a guy who will be pushing 50 soon, Andy Bell is freaking ripped. Pretty sure he almost turned me to the other team last night.
Going to see Peter Bjorn & John this Friday. And Virgin fest on Saturday, which I hope will not be too much of a $#!t show.

Just now beginning to recover from seeing Peter Hook and Mates of State on the same night this week.
Mates of State didn't even go on until 12:30 a.m.
In the immortal words of Danny Glover and every aging cop or drill sergeant in movie history:
"I'm getting too old for this Edited!"
But brilliant performances by both. I still don't know if I'm comfortable with Peter Hook doing what he is doing - it's a little too much like blasphemy -- but I've seen him twice now and he really does seem to enjoy playing those Joy Division songs. Since nothing else in his life seems to make him happy, I say let him do it.
And Mates of State, well, they're just so much fun it's not even fair.
Unless I go see the Lemonheads in a couple of weeks, my next concert will be on Oct. 18......
New Order!!! In Paris!!!
(yes, it will be New Order minus Peter Hook -- unless he has a change of heart, since this is a benefit show -- but it's still motherfrakking New Order!!!)
I'm pretty sure I should probably kill myself after that, since I won't ever do anything this cool ever again.

Kenny Garrett, at Blues Alley in D.C., was outstanding. Though I hated waiting in line, the wait was worth it. Garrett is a tremendous alto player.

In response to the question:
Yes. Yes I have seen a good concert lately.
I've seen a concert so good, I can pretty much die now with no regrets.
(But adventure trips overseas to see bands are so awesome, I may just want to survive long enough to hop over to see The Stone Roses in Manchester in June - even though they will be coming to America).
That is all. I'm still coming down.

Saw Deep River (a blatant copy of Sugarland - not that that's a bad thing), Jon McLaughlin, and Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers at 9:30 last night.
I've been a Jon McLaughlin fan for many years - he plays piano so well that there are times when all you see is a blur of his hands. Imagine him to be John Mayer but with a rock/blues side - one of his earlier songs he played dealt with not being popular in high school, but he keeps moving past the Taylor Swift crowd to more mature songs about love and loss. He also covered "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkely, which is a plus in my book.
I had also never heard Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers before.
Let me back up. I'm positive that the best case for a band that I've heard to create a cult is Cowboy Mouth, whose drummer is basically like a revivalist preacher who listened to Metallica. But a close second is the Sixers - lots of fans were mouthing the lyrics, and many were doing the choreographed dance.
But the strange part was the three encores - in each case, after hearing deafening cheers, all the members of the band seemed genuinely surprised and happy at the reception they received. It left a very positive impression on me.
As for style, it's pop folk, if that makes any sense. They made a new fan last night.

Cowboy Mouth has been around for a while. Excellent Big Easy band. I think I first heard them in the '80's.

Saw Radiohead at HP Pavilion in San Jose a few days ago. Amazing. If you like Radiohead, please see them live, they will not disappoint. And then see them again. And again. And again.

And again. i beg to differ. i absolutely love radiohead and have seen them three times, first time was great but short set at the tibetan freedom festival back in 1997, second was hollywood bowl in LA one of the best shows i have ever seen of any group, two years later saw them again, same venue, and it was avg at best. i was not the only one who thought that, others in my group thought so as well and critics in the la times agreed. my brother went to their show a day later in San Diego and told me they told the crowd about how they mailed it in for their previous show. they have a rep of doing that, they are an all or nothing show - some nights they are not in the mood or dont get up for it and you get a lame show. tough on the customer who likely threw down over $100 for the ticket plus another $100 on parking, beer, babysitter etc. as much as i loved their first show i would have a hard time paying more than $20 to see them again, and that aint happening any time soon, it is just too much of a risk with scarce entertainment funds in my bank account.

Fair enough. I did not think they mailed it in in San Jose - I was impressed by the amount of energy that Thom Yorke had for a guy in his 40's. This was the second time I had seen them, and I was also impressed by how different the set lists were between the shows. Looking at their set lists from show to show, I feel like they never do exactly the same show twice. True, you will have to pay $80+ to see them (and luckily I won't have to worry about babysitters for a while), but in my experiences, I definitely felt it was worth it.

Saw Rodrigo y Gabriela a couple of week ago. They played half the show with a band...wasn't feelin it. Too much sound minimized their sound. Gabriela could have been backstage for most of it for all I could tell, which I'm guessing is part of the point with her wrist injury. The band doesn't sound bad on the CD, but in person, it was just a wall of sound (and not in a good way).

David Murray Black Music Infinity Quartet at An Die Musik in Baltimore. Great set. First heard Murray back in the 70's with the World Saxopohone Quartet. Murray's background, as evidenced by his membership in the WSQ, is what many term "avant garde". What makes his music so wonderfully entertaining today is that he incorporates those elements of "outside" playing, that avant garde style, in quite mainstream, "inside" arrangements. It's inside music with an outside feel, and it's just great. Murray is not a bebop, neo bop, post bop, or any kind of bop player. His style is original. The band was outstanding as well: Nasheet Waits on drums, Marc Cary on piano, and Jaribu Shahid on bass. $25 well spent!
Also saw the Rebirth Brass Band at Artscape in Baltimore. New Orleans people came out of the woodwork to see the Rebirth. We turned it out, right in front of the stage. Big fun!

Will try to report back from Lollapalooza if I survive it next weekend.
The headliners are all snoozers this year (Black Sabbath is sure to be a train wreck and I'm kinda over The Black Keys and Jack White), but there's a lot of really good down ticket performances I'm looking forward to.
Happy Perry Farrell decided to do a Jane's Addiction show this year (not inside the park), which gives me a great reason to skip the abominable Chili Peppers.
