US Basketball team looked like skank yesterday against Australia--who didn't have Andrew Bogut playing--he sat out--and from way team is built-he's type who is going to give them troubles--inside players are lacking for Team USA--it's Dwight Howard and nothing else.Austrailia is decent--but not one of the top contenders for gold medal. BTW, how hypocritical is it for NBA teams asking the foreign players to sit out and "not risk injury" in international play--but allowing Americans to play? I mean are we to point of desperation where we need to weaken the field to get a Gold Medal? If this team loses and doesn't get Gold, please go back to Collegiate players. P.S---someone end the announcing career of guy working with Fran Frischilla. I'm rooting for USA but it made me feel good that K's team was getting burned on backdoor cuts against a team that was apparently using a version of the Princeton

Great for exposure for the problems there and an example of what America truly should be about.

Great about Lopez Lomong's carrying the flag. He was one of the runners who beat out GU grad Chris Lukezic in the 1500m OT finals.

The story that I will never forget about carrying the Olympic torch was about Karl Prima Dona Malone. When the Olympics were in Salt Lake, he was selected to carry the torch part of the way, but he was all whining and bitching because he thought he should be the one to carry the torch into the city limits. Instead that honor went to "merely" a paraplegic girl in a wheelchair. Instead, Karl got to carry the torch out in the middle of the desert where no one would see him. What a pretentious jerk. I still relish in the fact that the Lakers didn't win the year they added Malone and Payton to their team. The best part was that Payton went to Miami later and got his ring. Alas, poor Malone is forced to wonder what could have been ....
GOOD!

Our newspaper had an Olympic preview today. It wasn't especially informative, but it was somewhat interesting. Like I said at the beginning of this thread, I haven't paid nearly as much attention to the Olympics as I did when I was a kid. Looking at the assorted events, there were a couple that jumped out at me. TaeKwonDo is an event now. I remember Judo, but this is a different discipline and has been in the Olympics since 2000. I probably caught some of it 4 years ago and just didn't realize that it was different than Judo.
Here is one that I have no idea about. Trampoline. Yep, they have Trampoline in the Olympics.
And of course there are everyone's favorites: rythmic gymnastics and syncronized swimming.

Mr. T would not approve: ;D (Pulling this ad in England is probably the best thing that could have happened for Snickers AND for Mr. T.) ...but this one is still funnier:

Yes, quite the controversy on the racewalk boards (among others) about that commercial.

So far the highlights for me of the Olympics have been seeing Lomong's carrying the flag, Yao's carrying the boy hero, and Mirits Yifter's carrying the Ethiopia flag (no mention was made of him just the caption on TV, but he won two gold medals in Moscow in 1980; he was an amazing distance runner whom I saw live twice at races in Canada).

I like the arrangement they're using for the American anthem.

How in the HELL did the soccer team blow that?!!
Man, they played a great second half. Too bad they couldn't close it out. But hopefully they'll still get through to the quarters.

RDF, one thing I forgot to mention: I totally agree with your sentiment concerning the basketball team. I really wish it could return to a true amateur event. That might have been part of the allure. Our guys truly were amateurs, while those from the likes of E. Germany, Russia etc... weren't. But there is no way that I am going to root for us to lose. I can dislike individuals, but when one team has U.S.A. on the front and the other doesn't ... there is zero doubt as to who I want to win. Coach K alone is enough reason for me to want that team to lose.

Swimming relay just took it to the French! U-S-A! U-S-A!
I love it when a team that talks too much gets taken down a peg.

That race was incredible. I mean sooooo goood for so many reasons. Shutting up those cocky French bastards. The incredible chase and catch on the final quarter of the Race. The fact that the USA smashed the previous WR by 4 seconds! The fact that I think at least 4 of the teams were faster than the previous WR.
WOW just wow. Best moment of the Olympics so far.

Agree with the above sentiments regarding the men's relay late last night EST. Freakin' sweet, especially considering all the trash the French swimmer was talking. That said, I still can't get over these stupid swimsuits and the "world records" these people are setting. Four teams beat the WR? You're telling me all of those people got that much better in just four years??? I don't buy it. Stupid technology... I agree. It doesn't take away from the drama of the event, but for me the excitement is exclusively on the race to the finish, and not at all on the time. The green world record line is kind of a neat idea, but it seems sort of superfluous. In these Olympics, it's more newsworthy if someone DOESN'T break a world record. And Michael Phelps should pull his pants up.
