Ok, Tbird, it's on. And speaking of game times, I am praying that it will be a night game tomorrow, because if it's a day game, I will be in schul and totally unable to follow anything.
Maybe I should tell my wife I'm sick tomorrow.
Nah, I can't do that. Can't start the new year off with a sin.
But then again...

30 mph winds blowing out does not bode well for the Twins. I'm worried about Blackburn, and I'm worried about the fact Morneau isn't hitting. The Sox are doing a blackout though...
I'm also Editeded that home field for the one game playoff was determined by a coin flip. Look--obviously I'd rather it have been due to head to head b/c the Twins won that 10-8, but let's be honest--why exactly, when there are ways to determine home field that were determined ON THE FIELD (say, division record, or league record for a Wild Card playoff), should it be determined by a coin flip??

Danks and Jenks... oh, and Thome. Great game. Don't forget Griffey's great throw from CF to keep the run off the board. That made the entire trade worth it ;D Bring on the Devil Rays!

Danks and Jenks... oh, and Thome. Great game. You forgot Ken Griffey, Jr. and his frozen rope! Nasty stuff from Austinite John Danks this evening. Winning a close one like that felt like '05 all over again. I like the South Siders' chances against Tampa, but even if the Sox don't go anywhere, it felt really, really good to watch Chicago stick it to the Minnesota Twins. Misplaced Blue & Gray Board Question: With both Chicago teams in the playoffs, which does Obama pretend to be a fan of? Which MLB team does McCain adopt since the D-Backs are out?

You can't doubt Obama's bona fides when it comes to baseball: he's a Sox Fan. As is Daley. The Cubs have to content themselves with the support of that noted statesman, Rod Blagojevich.
Great win. Danks was absolutely filthy. Most telling moment was late in the game when Mauer(!) tried to lay down a bunt just to get something started. I do think that the TBS radar gun is juiced, however. Jenks hasn't seen 98 mph in about 3 years, and there is no way he reached that number tonight.
Rooter, I hope you got back in time for the game.

Thanks for your kind thoughts, C86. I ended up watching the entire game but the first inning while having an early dinner at a restaurant near my mother-in-law's house. I think a few of the other patrons thought I had lost my mind.
I retract my criticism of Blackburn. He was outstanding tonight, so perhaps my criticism of him was unfair.
I also have to give some love to AJ for his outstanding block of the plate.
Finally, I have to say that the Sox were lucky to get this game at home. If they play in Minnie, I'm sure they lose. That's the way things work with coin flips sometimes, and coin flips are the way the site for these games has always been determined, fair or not. The interesting thing is that the Sox and Twins had identical home records, road records and division records through 162 games, and almost identical run differential. Pretty even, I guess.
My mantra for this playoff season, given that my two teams have the two worst records among playoff teams, is Remember the 2006 Cardinals! Remember the 2006 Cardinals!

What a game!
Ken Griffey Jr and Jim Thome coming up big in a huge game. Its 1995 again!
In case he does something tonight to land him in some sort of correctional facility, let me be the first to say that TBird was an outstanding guy, a good friend, and a great Hoya. I hope the judge will be lenient.

I hope the judge will be lenient. So far, the police haven't caught up to me yet. Thome was huge. Denks was huge. Morneau was not. The Canadian Nowitski better not win the MVP or even I'm going to be mad. Blackburn just told Ozzie to suck it. And that was a nice catch by Anderson to end the game. HOWEVER please stop acting like Griffey made some amazing throw. He was in shallow center field (I honestly think Cabrera could have caught that ball if there was no one on base) -- and he barely had enough on the throw to get out Cuddyer, who's not slow, but he's not fast and he's just back from a foot injury. Yes, it was an accurate throw, but I can't think of another center fielder outside of Bernie Williams where Cuddyer even considers running on that pop up to shallow center, so please, let's stop the "frozen rope" crap--Griffey couldn't even throw the ball 150 ft with out bouncing it right after the pitchers mound.

That being said, Mauer bunting wasn't that surprising, though it still shows how well Danks was pitching. I think Mauer had 5-8 bunt hits this year--he's always willing to drop one down when he thinks he can catch the other team napping or he wasn't seeing the ball well (which I think was the case last night b/c Danks was pitching so well)

TBird, I'll bet you a nickel that the Sox finish ahead of the Twins. I guess it's appropriate that I owe you a coin... where would you like it sent to?

Please send to the Hoyarooter Slush Fund, uh, Trust Fund in the Netherlands Antilles.
I totally agree with you on Griffey's throw. I was actually shocked that Cuddyer attempted to score on that ball. I was thinking that the Twins thought Juan Pierre was in center. That's why I wanted to make sure that Pierzinski received his due props, since he both blocked the plate and held the ball on a bang bang play. Cuddyer's not exactly Dustin Pedroia-sized, either - he hit AJ with full force.

And very true about AJ's block of the plate--that was quality, and very different from when Torii ran over the Sox catcher in 2004 (awwww, sweet memories). I've always liked AJ, and I remember being mad when the Twins traded (lingering bitterness over the Mauer over Prior choice...long story). That being said, the bleached hair, well, that's the kind of thing a Devendorf would do and I just can't like someone like that.

I guess Mauer over Prior turned out to be a pretty good decision.
Also, there's no doubt that AJ marches to the beat of his own drummer. But I would expect Twins fans to still like him, even though he's now with the Sox, since he was a mainstay of the Twins' success for a number of years (and also brought them Nathan and Liriano in that trade, right? How could you not love the guy?).

Really, it was only when he bleached his hair that he lost me, but a lot of Twins fans have started hating him for that. Oh well. And the Mauer/Prior thing is really one of those great what-ifs. What if Prior had been in the Twins' organization, where they understand how to bring up young pitchers without destroying them, rather than in the Cubs organization, where his arm was under the care of one Dusty Baker. Of course, the Twins never really consider Prior because of cost (and because Mauer was from MN and therefore guaranteed to be a huge draw for fans, even if he was only average). Hence my bitterness--I wanted Prior.
