ryan howard is the mvp, plain and simple. i don't care about BA and all that crap. he drives in a ton of runs and hits homers when it matters, unlike some other players we all know. He plays in a shoebox and has good baseball players who get on base in front of him. Clearly the MVP. Does anyone honestly argue that the Phillies would be worse or the Cardinals would be better if they traded 1B?

please don't give me the ballpark garbage. howard only has 2 more homers at home than on the road. not to mention pujols plays road games in cincy, houston, and wrigley while howard plays in shea, washington, and florida.
while burrell, utley, and rollins have struggled in parts of the 2nd half, howard has raised his average 30 points since 7/1. he has carried this team to first place, while the cards faded.

The MVP isn't an award for the player who played the best in September. It's an award for the most value for the season. The Cards fading hasn't been Pujols fault. Despite needing Tommy John Surgery, he has posted four months with an OPS over 1.000, two of which his OPS was over 1.100, and one where his OPS was 1.200. His OPS has been over .900 every month. His OPS+ is a ridiculous 183, the highest in MLB. Howard has had an OPS under .800 in three months, including in August where he apparently buckled under the heat of the pennant races really getting under way. Howard's OPS+ is 118. That's fourth on his team, behind Utley, Burrell and Jayson Werth.

Howard has only hit one more home run in his career at CBP than on the road. Most of Ryan's home runs travel far enough that they get out of whatever stadium the Phillies happen to be playing in at the moment.
Also, for the year CBP's park factor is 15th in the majors. So, uh, yeah, quite a shoebox.

Alright, I will be fair- Howard's HR numbers are pretty legit. It does not change the fact that he would be one of the worst MVP choices ever based on pretty much every advanced metric available (most of which do not even take into account his below average play at the least difficult defensive position).
According to VORP (which I know has its detractors, but does at least account for the difference in value of positions), Howard is 39th in the NL. Thirty-freaking-ninth. Behind not only the aforementioned Utley and Werth but also Rollins and Victorino (and 34 other dudes, not even including pitchers, who are of course never valuable enough to win MVP).

Yes, I was joking. I'm not sure if this is Pujols' best year, but he is having a great year. Unexpected contributions from Ludwick and The Miracle Man haven't hurt. The Cardinals' problem is that, once you get past Adam Wainwright, their pitching staff consists of Smoke and Mirrors. It's amazing that they were able to hang around for as long as they did.

Also, any writer who votes for K-Rod should be taken out back and shot. That is a ridiculous statement. Those freaks don't deserve to be taken out back. Also, Ryan Howard cannot win MVP this season due to the little-known MLB rule that anyone who endorses over 3,500 products within a season is ineligible for the award.

I hate you, Javier Vasquez. I'll second that, but also throw in that the entire team laid a gigantic stink bomb last night. Way to man up with the season on the line, guys.

that crashing sound you hear coming from flushing is the mets.....again. watching them is like a train wreck. you know it's happening and there's nothing you can do about it. you don't want to watch, but you have to. this is the best reality show on tv. the fan reaction shots on tv alone make it worth watching. to make things worse, the marlins visit this final weekend (just like last year) for the last games at shea. these teams do not like one another and the young marlins would like nothing better than to ruin the mets post season chances......again.
somewhere, willie randolph is smiling....

Well, that last paragraph was pretty damn funny (and accurate).
What a complete and utter debacle these Mets are. They are playing like they don't want to make the playoffs. If they don't make the playoffs, they need to completely clear house after two horrendous collapses in a row. I'll be there for the last game at Shea on Sunday, assuming it is not a rain out.

Neither team deserves praise, I cant see either winning a series against Tampa/Boston. And it makes me so mad that I could storm the field and beat up a first base coach

They solve that and they have a shot if they can go liriano, baker, slowey...who knows what can happen (see the 2006 cardinals) And the Twins have been coming through against the White Sox, so I'm going to praise them. Hopefully they keep it up.

I actually tried to watch a baseball game last night.
I am really, REALLY glad I am not a Mets fan.
That was the third baseball game I've seen all year (well, except a few innnings here or there while channel surfing). One was Orioles-Yankees, when I went up to Baltimore to see my family.
The other two were:
1. Going to Nationals Park - with a Mets fan - to see the Mets get shut out 1-0. 2. Last night.
I only have one word: Yeesh!

As to bat-girl, I didn't exactly see the Twins kick butt on the White Sox in Chicago this year. It's just one of those home field things, I guess. And of course that archive preceded Ozzie's arrival. He loves the Twins, and makes no bones about it. So bat-girl can take a hike.
Meanwhile, if this keeps up I expect to require hospitalization from the concussion I am inflicting upon myself from constantly banging my head against the wall. Blackburn had been pitching so well of late (not), and of course the Sox even made him look good. Choke artists (exceeded only by the Mets - that was brutal last night).
