Just from personal experience:
Best: St. John's. Perhaps it's been because they've fallen far over the past few years (and maybe some the 80's grads can shed some more light on how they were back in their heyday), but I can't recall a single time when SJU fans annoyed me. Honorable mention: L'ville (very knowledgeable and classy fans, at least the ones I saw at BET).
Worst: WVU. It's one thing to cuss at me. But to cuss at me with barely any command of the English language (and teeth for that matter), I wouldn't say the term "barn-yard animals" is merely a simile. Honorable mention: Syracuse and UConn (both particularly at BET).

My rankings are all based on Phone Booth, MSG, or other personal experience and those related to me by trusted associates, and are limited to basketball.
Big East
Classy: Louisville, Cincy
Hit or Miss: Notre Dame, Pitt, St John's (though they've been too dejected lately to make much of a stink about anything), Villanova (example: the dude who sits behind us in the box is great, but his annoying bratty kid is awful)
Unclassy: Syracuse, MQ
Worst: WVU and UConn are tied; though I can see WVU being much worse if they had the same program success as UConn. I can't stand their mentality, their behavior, or their collective ignorance of the game.
Non-Big East Examples Classy: UCLA, UNC, Memphis Hit or Miss: Duke (most the people who have actually gone there are good; their "mercenaries" and bandwagoners mostly suck), Vandy, Michigan State Unclassy: Washington State, Illinois, Texas Worst: Maryland, Ohio State

GOOD: Most of the CUSA schools, SJU, Rutgers (the jerks are still too busy bandwagoning for football for this to change), Providence (they're too depressed to start anything)
BAD: WVU fans in Morgantown, UConn, Pitt (I nearly got strangled by one for singing "If You Can't Go To College Go To Pitt" at BET last year), ND (I HATE their fight song...just hearing a few notes sets me off...take your fist pumping and shove it), MQ (it's time to move on from the cult of Al guys, he's dead)
UGLY: Syracuse fans before the game (most of the people I met at the Carrier Dome were dare I say...nice. Wished us luck, hoped for a good game, couldn't taunt without laughing at themselves...then the game started).
SUPER DUPER FUGLY: Seton Hall (why?!? it's not like you've done anything in the past 15 years), WVU fans in DC, Syracuse fans during/after games no matter what happens and most of all, VILLA-BLEEPING-NOVA. I have an excuse, I grew up there, I have dealt with Nova fans my whole life. 1985 is the only shred of history they have. They are beyond classless, they are offensive to all of my senses. Students fighting with GTown alums 30 years older than them, racism, childish humor, they all suck. I say with pride I beat a girl up over GU/VU basketball in 5th grade and you all know why she deserved it.

Haven't had any experiences to warrant a "classiest" non-GU BE fan title. As to the least classy? Well, where to begin?
- How about the pasty UConn fans who flood the Garden during the BE tournament? I will never forget the gloating/taunting/insults hurled at me after Jerome's and Iverson's shots went in'n'out at the end of the 1996 championship game -by the same Husky "fans" who my friend and I courteously chatted to throughout the game.
- How about the 'nova fans who descend on the Phone Booth any time their team gets scheduled here? I almost fought a jerk who wanted to take my "G" commemorative lapel pin for the first game at MCI Center back in '97. After the loss, I wanted to flush it down the toilet myself.
- 'cuse fans? Too many graphic and disgusting anecdotes to even bother posting.
Finally, special mention to the quartet of Dook jerks sitting behind my wife and me during the upset game at MCI Center in '06 -at one point during the Duke run towards the end of the game, I had to swat away at one of them after he tried to simulate choking around my neck. I would have given him a knuckle sandwich if the security guy hadn't been 2 steps away...
So, my wife now brings her Mace to games against any of the schools listed above.

After traveling to Nova, UConn, Seton Hall, and Syracuse on Hoya Blue Roadtrips (because you can really tell how classy fans are when they deal with a whole bunch of college kids from the opposing school), I would say that
- my BEST experience came at: UConn - The only taunting we got was from the Husky coming up to pay us a little visit. - my WORSE experience came at: Syracuse - I was called horrible, horrible names by grown men, people threw snowballs at us, and all of their fans were just generally offensive and obnoxious.
Nova fans didn't like us, but nothing they said to us was really offensive. Seton Hall really didn't have many fans to even try to respond to our presence.

Given that so many of you insist that I am not a fan of Georgetown, then I think the obvious answer is me. I am certainly the epitome of class.
Along a similar line, down here in the SEC, the generally accepted rule is that Ole Miss fans are the nicest of any and I can say nothing to refute that. They are a fun group and very hospitable.
The worst has to be LSU fans. They are mean and take things too far. I have seen them vandalize rows of vehicles, tear up tents and banners and that says nothing of their rudeness and vulgarity. I think that South Carolina fans deserve an honorable mention as they are very mouthy fans. THe strange part is that they have been that way since they first joined the SEC and they, like Seton Hall, have little reason for arrogance. For all the flack about the Florida-Georgia rivalry, at least from my personal experience it is a fairly friendly atmosphere. I think maybe the 50/50 fanbase encourages this.
Anyhow, there's one person's SEC views.
Incidentally, the best fans by sport are without a doubt baseball. I have been to Athens, Starkeville, Auburn, FSU, Miami among others. I have also entertained fans of every SEC school and many others around the Country and the only bad fans at baseball that I have ever seen are from Miami. Aside from Miami fans, every group of fans from every school that I have interacted with were very friendly and social.

The Florida fans in Atlanta were horrendous. Stupid and arrogant is not a good combo.

UConn is the scum of the earth. They not only are arrogant, they also support the cheating/dirty recruiting that is Jim Calhoun. Hell of a coach but a scumball.

After two years of going to the Georgetown games at Freedom Hall, I've had a mixed experience with the Louisville fans. Last year, sitting behind the Hoyas bench, my friend and I were subjected to vulgar name calling the whole game, however at the end of the game one of the main culprits came down to shake my hand and congratulate me on the win. This year, sitting in a UL alumni section across from the student section, the alumni sitting around us were very nice and respectful usually just counter cheering us Hoya fans, while the students across the aisle swore at us and flicked us off the whole first half, then in the second half they pushed us around, threw things at us, waved posters in our faces, and generally taunted us.
So I'll have to agree with everything people are saying here about the UL alumni fans. Terrific group. I'm sure alcohol and immaturity simply got the best of the students that were sitting near us this year.

i went to the gu/nova game at nova two years ago in a WAG shirt, and got berated the entire game by most of the student section. the fact we were up most of the game allowed me to say "scoreboard" a whole lot... however, since that day, i've wanted nothing more than to beat the pants off of nova every time we play them.
3-1 since then ain't too shabby. especially when it includes a jessie sapp halfcourt shot, a 26-2 lead in the big east quarterfinals, and a phantom foul with 0.1 seconds left and jonny wallace crushing upset dreams...

In general, Big East fans are among the most knowledgeable in sports, but classy isn't normally among the terms I would think of for many. I have seen pockets of St. Johns, ND and Marquette fans who were outstanding. The St Johns crowds in the Garden in the 80s had some of the best fans I've seen, but I wouldn't necessarily apply the word "classy." Rutgers crowds are fun and raucous. I even sat next to a Syracuse grad in the old Cap Center once who was great -- especially as Iverson lit up the Oranges.
I have little good to say about Nova or UConn fans. Almost got attacked in Philly wearing my Hoyas shirt once. The worst, however, are the WV idiots who show up in the phone booth. I don't want to bring my kids to WV games to hear what they're shouting (although they do provide a good lesson in the abuse of alcohol). A special non-Big East dishonorable mention to Maryland.

The Cuse fans at the Dome were horrible, before the game a whale of a women with two young kids sees me and then says "Damnit another Editeding Georgetown kid what the hell are they doing here!" I was shocked that a mother would say something like that in front of her kids. Then there was the fact that after the game their fans were throwing snow balls and chunks of ice at us. I can understand taunting and jeering, but throwing stuff is just horrible. I mean they won first of all I'd understand it more if they lost. Bunch of Editeds!

You know, after reading this thread, I just hope that we all keep this in mind we have to deal with opposing fans at Verizon. I wonder what they would say about their experiences with our fans . . . .

Everything i've read about georgetown fans has been one of two things. First after reading our board people tend to say we're arrogant .. After meeting us in person they tend to say were classy and respectful fans. Just what I've seen from reading other boards. Most fans think we're good. The only knock i've ever seen against us is arrogance and it's mostly in reference to this board, which i find odd since most other boards i.e. lousiville are much more arrogant than ours.

Arrogance is an easy label to throw at a school like ours, without any real evidence to back it up.

I do wonder how the Stubhub Beneficiaries feel about our fans along the sidelines in the lower bowl. Do our fans say anything to these visitors, or are they busy cheering the team on? Any altercations in these sections?
In the Garden, I always hated UCONN fans the most, but their presence has not been felt in particular in MCI these past two years, so I wouldn't put them at the top of my list.
In terms of overall annoyance level, I think you have to start with MU and WVU these days. WVU has the "Let's Go Mountaineers" chant that just grates at nerves. MU fans have struck me as unnecessarily arrogant in the MCI Center given who/what they cheer for and prove that circuses can travel.

Based on personal experience - which is limited, I'd go with the following:
Classy - Villanova - I think I'm probably just the beneficiary of sitting next to some actual priests from Nova during the BET 3 years ago, they knew a lot about the game and had some good natured fun about monitoring whether we were eating any meat on a Friday.
Not so classy - WVU, they have one cheer that they love and generally show up to games ready to talk a lot of talk.
Worst - Pitt, at the Big East final I actually had a Pitt fan hurl insults at me and offer to fight me, then I went outside MSG where the same threats were repeated.
