I noticed that as well Dan. Good thing the and his family don't have inflated opinions of themselves. Hairston is a nice player, but the fact that we're now going to have Carmelo Anthony mentioned everytime an NCAA tournament comes around and teams with prominent FR will get the "Can he do what Carmelo Anthony did for the ORANGE"?? Nice to see how little people respect Anthony's game. I'm not a Cuse fan, but the guy was a once in a lifetime player and has shown that at every level so far. Very few players accomplish what he has in winning National Championship and immediately leading a terrible team (16 wins year before his arrival) to 43 wins and the Playoffs--in the Western Conference which is by far the stronger of two. Hairston's comments on "connections" are okay by me. Why not state the real reason you want to attend a school? And it's not like Oregon hasn't produced some NBA players of recent note--Fred Jones, Ridenour, and soon to be Luke Jackson. Kent's got some talent on the team, but the funniest thing about Oregon basketball is this player they have named Klatt, Platt, something like that. He looks like the White Guy with afro from JAWS 2 who goes out with Brody's kid on the sailboat and Keith Gordon in his days as Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. DEAD RINGER and makes me laugh out loud every time I see him play. ;D

I say good for him.
This is a multibillion dollar industry, and if he can get some connections that are going to help make him some money that is great news for him, and his family.
Academically they are two massive state schools, so for the typical undergrad the studies are problem a wash. These companies are going to make money off of him, and it is good to see that he is going to do what he can to make money from the companies.

He's a top twenty player, and the chances of him "Carmeloizing" anything are less than him "Carmelizing" some apples at the state fair. Very few players these days get shoe contracts that actually pay them money -- the vast majority of players in Nike ads do it for free, or shoes, because of the exposure. The kid isn't Carmelo. He isn't Dwayne Wade. He's more likely Keith Bogans. Of course, if you're referring to under the table payments to go to Oregon, that may happen. And I guess he'll be "getting his." I can't really condone breaking the rules. Just saying if the kid thinks he has a Nike contract sewn up because he went to Oregon, he's smoking something. If he's a lottery pick, he might get a small contract -- but he'd get one coming from Kansas, too.

I have no idea what his deal with Nike is, but apparently no one is denying that they played a part in putting him there. What that leads to down the road who knows, but it certainly can't hurt.
If he becomes a college star this year, maybe they give him a Telfair like deal and make his entry into the league a no brainer.
I am not saying this is good for college sports, but it is good for the individual.

It's amazing how Carmelo has captured the basketball world. I acknowledge he was super in Syracuse's NCAA championship run. But, over the course of that season, Michael Sweetney was a better player. Look at the numbers.

Andy Katz' Daily Word on the subject: Ducks give Hairston royal treatmentespn.go.com/ncb/s/katzword.html"Thursday, May 13: Oregon landed Malik Hairston on Wednesday after he landed in Eugene via a private jet. ... Oregon has run a clean program and flying Hairston from Detroit to Eugene isn't against the rules. But it sends message that Hairston is royalty. Oregon says it had a short 24-hour window to get Hairston in for a recruiting visit April 23-24. ... According to Flightcraft, the company used, a roundtrip Detroit-Eugene chartered service would run $21,000 (a figure not disputed by Oregon). A Lincoln Town Car picked up Hairston, another fact not argued by the staff. Hairston flew commercial to his other visits, although plenty of other schools do this. The irony is that Oregon's Ernie Kent is against private planes for recruits and he's one of the coaches pushing to get rid of the practice." $21,000? That's an assistant coach for the Hoyas! Sheesh!

That is absurd! I can't understand how this sort of thing is allowed.

How is that legal? I guess they are saying they are allowed to fly someone to a visit? Well what's to stop a big campus school from loaning their star player an Escalade saying he needs it to get all over campus from his off campus house? One more reason why the only more idiotic, crooked bunch of jerks than the NCAA in sports is the IOC.
GO HOYAS!!!

Did some of you not realize that this charter planes treatment has been going on for awhile now at the big state universities? The Wash Times had an excellent piece on it years ago. Just one more advantage the big schools have. And of course I'm sure Kent ain't complaining about the plane trips now.
