Anyone notice that Calhoun was out with the flu? Uconn hasn't played Marquette yet, so I have no idea as to where he picked it up.

OK, I think I'm in a decent enough state of mind to make a coherent post...
Gutty performance by the entire team. We outrebounded an excellent rebounding team (much better effort in this department) and shot much better (14-19 FT) from the line. I thought Uconn played about as well as they could have (18-21 FT, only 11 TOs), but great teams are the ones that are able to absorb the other team's best shot and still come away with victories. Anyone at VC today: you guys were amazing in terms of crowd volume, and much thanks for making it a hostile environment in a game where every little bit could have made the difference.
Back to back monster performances from Roy. His three notwithstanding, he was dominant on the boards, was a fort on defense in the paint, and offensively looked as comfortable as he has all season in attacking the basket and being aggressive. One play really stands out, where he was initially blocked and he regained possession out near the 3 point line. He then made up his mind that he was not going to be denied by ANYTHING and quickly made another move into the paint to draw the foul. It's that kind of beasting mentality I want to see from Roy every night, and without him today, we get blown out easy.
Austin Freeman... like I said after the Depaul game, the guy just has a knack for making momentum shifting shots. If we need to stop an opponent's run, or we need a shot when our offense is stagnant, he's the guy that always comes up with a huge bucket. Did it I think when UConn had either pulled to within 1 or tied the game like around 51-all, and did it again when we were down 6 with under 4 to play with an enormous 3. The guy has the balls to take big shots in big situations. But he also has the ability and calmness to make them. He's going to be a special player when all is said and done.
Major props to Ewing for his work on the boards and his shooting in the 1st half. His physical play set the tone early in the game, and minus I think one bad play where he fouled a 3 point shooter at the top of the key, he played a damn good game when we needed him the most.
On the last play: don't kid yourself... that wasn't the shot that was designed coming out of the huddle. But was it the best shot we could have gotten with the situation that presented itself? Quite possibly, yes. If Roy has the confidence to take and make that shot when he's uncontested, then by all means he should take it. An open shot is an open shot.
I think going forward, this is the rotation you're going to see in our bigger and more closely contested games in terms of minutes played. The starting five will get the majority of the minutes with Rivers and Ewing playing significant minutes apiece (15-20 MPG). You might see Macklin for a spell or two like today, but that will be it. I hope the heavy minutes some of our guys logged (Roy, Sapp, Freeman) won't be a factor for the quick turnaround on Monday, but the fact that III used a long bench in the OOC schedule in order to keep everyone as fresh as possible will pay off now as we enter the meat of our schedule.
I'm so proud of the team today. Years ago, when the game was close going into the final 4 minutes, I always expected the worst to happen. Today was the first time that I actually caught myself thinking; wow, I actually am still pretty confident despite the situation looking a little bleak. Big time teams make big plays in crunch time, and that's what separates the elite from the the just-solid teams.

Roy's three should be the #1 play on ESPN's top 10!
Freeman is a coldblooded assassin!
Roy was an absolute beast had some great blocks and rebounds and great post moves.

Does anybody have the Chvotkin call of Roy's 3? I'd love to hear that. Maybe ESPN will play it over the highlight like they sometimes do with a local radio call ("Call of the day" or something like that).

Ucon message board blowing up over the horrific officiating in the game. Lots of "I'm not the type to complain about the refs, but they cost us the game" posts. mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=342#s=342&f=2871My favorite post: "I'll bet Thabeet could hit that shot too. Actually, I'd like to see him get some high post shots. This would give Adrien some operating room down low too."

Just to underscore some of what's been posted . . . Big time atmosphere at the Booth. Even the lower bowl was on its feet for the last few minutes. Give props to UConn for playing great defense. They disrupted us and blocked our shots time and again. Our own defense was spotty, sometimes great but sometimes leaving #3 (Wiggins) wide open on the wing (1st half) and leaving the basket wide open for the dunk (2nd half). They were noticably quicker than we were most of the game. Great rebounding for a change. We got the ones we had a chance for. I agree about Jon. Not sure why, but his game just wasn't there today. Roy, however, played with intensity and determination all game. Sometimes I still wish he wouldn't dribble down low to get better position, since frequently the result is that the *defense* has time to get better position, but he was aggressive all day. He must have been reading the board. Odd ref'g - we just weren't getting any calls early, but later it seemed like both teams were equally benefiting. Some fouls that looked obvious to me from section 110 weren't called, and others that looked like barely-touches were called. Rival reel today was really good. And I liked the new (student?) announcer during the time-out promos. A little less in-your-face than the regular guy.

Sometimes they called it loose and sometimes they called it tight. Oh well that's just what happens when you play physically.

First Thoughts on the Box Score:
1) The Heart-Attack Hoyas are back!
2) Shooting. Ugh. Wallace (1 of 7) had a dismal day from beyond the three-point arc, and Sapp (1 of 4) wasn’t great, but, overall, the three-point shooting wasn’t bad—and showed only a small decline in the Hoya’s otherwise weak second half: 5 of 11 in the first half, and 5 of 12 in the second, 43.5% for the game. It was 2-pt shooting that collapsed in the second half, from 10 of 19 in the first half to 4 of 15 in the second, a horrible 26.7%.
3) Rebounding was very solid—but it’s a sign of how off the team’s rebounding had been that a solid game should seem first-rate. The Hoya’s got 20 of 25 rebounds on their defensive end (80%), and 12 of 36 on their offensive end (33%). Georgetown’s only failure in rebounding seemed, as I watched the game, to come on long rebounds off the Hoya’s missed three-pointers, which the Huskies were often quicker in getting to and led to fastbreak points.
4) Ewing had his best game of the season: 4 of 5 from the field, 2 of 2 for three-pointers, 14 points, 5 rebounds, all in 23 minutes. Plus the energy, and the key basket at the end.
5) Hibbert had fine game, less efficient than he has been at his best, but in a long game for him, 36 minutes, he shot 50%, 7 of 14, and was 5 of 7 from the free-throw line, 20 points, with 8 rebounds. Plus, of course, the game-winning three-point shot. Curiously, only 2 assists.
6) Macklin’s 4 minutes were not impressive offensively. Nor were Rivers’ 15 minutes on the offensive end.
7) The Hoyas’ interior defense broke down repeatedly, allowing the Huskies to shoot 58% on two-point shots. The Hoyas’ pushed their defense against three-pointers, however, and held the Huskies to 31% for the game.
8) A great and exciting win for Georgetown’s fans, and a comeback that showed heart in addition to the patience and poise the team is known for. But not what anyone would call a well-played game by the Hoyas. Curiously, Wallace’s worst performance of the year revealed how vital his efficient play has been for the Hoyas.

ESPN 360 has 1 hour and 21 seconds of the middle of the Game. But that's all. I am dying to see a clip of Roy's 3 again

Best rebounding effort I've seen from us all year. Not only were the numbers good, but we actually went after the ball instead of waiting for it to come to us the way we have in the past. A couple of their offensive boards were when we still had good position on Thabeet, and I think we can live with those.
A couple of things bothered me. In the first half, I thought we got so worried about UConn's dribble penetration that we essentially conceded wide open jumpers. I'm hoping that's where Chris's speed will help us when he gets back. Also, in the second half, they were able to get out in transition by just running their guards down the court out of their 2-3. Is the reason we didn't get back falling asleep, or are their guards that talented/quick?

Surprisingly, the game was the 4th on the ESPN lineup at 6:00, behind Vanderbilt-Kentucky, Washington St-UCLA, and Carolina-NC State.
One item that deserves a second note--on two occasions the referees added time back on the clock after review--three seconds on one, a second on the other. Those four seconds could have had a major impact if Hibbert didn't have that extra time to get a good shot.
Overall, a ragged game with a great finish from a 99% full crowd at Verizon Center. I've got the laptop and will attempt to put together a recap this vening.

Watching SportsNite on comcast out of DC, they had rich's call over the highlight as they went to break early in the program.
OTOH, the f'ers lead off the highlights with UMCP instead of the GU game. Who's the #7 team in the country??? At least the Twerps lost again!

They have nothing to complain about - they were handed all kinds of crap from those refs. It was a rough game and they certainly weren't any worse off with some of those calls. That was some incredible INTENSITY from the entire crowd from the top of the 400's down to the front row. That's gotta be a record in terms of the number of students that showed up - wrapping around a quarter of the 400's to half court. Awesome.

Here's video of the last shot ( link), although the sound may be a bit jacked up. Maybe Haydenmac can get Rich's call out later. Seriously, the things I do for you guys . . .

From the Washington Post recap of the Fordham game, 1/1/08:
"That wasn't a fluke; that wasn't something he just threw up and it went in," Thompson said of Hibbert. "He can make that shot. I'm comfortable with him taking it, and he's comfortable taking it."
The coach paused briefly, and then added, "No, we're not going to all of sudden run plays to get Roy threes. But if people want to back off of him . . . he can consistently hit that."

The reffing sort of reminded me of the UNC game from last year. The refs absolutely screwed us at the start, but in the close stuff at the end they swallowed their whistles. Fans who only see the end of the game think that the refs helped us, but in reality it was pretty evenly cr*p through the full game.
