Stanford beats Oregon only if the entire Oregon team comes down with mono or the dreaded Crean flu. Like I said, it would be a totally, totally ridiculous upset. But there is some (not a lot, some) logic invovled here. 1. Oregon may get caught looking ahead to a big home game vs. Cal in Week 5. And the game is at Stanford. 2. Through two games, Stanford is averaging an impressive 452 yards of total offense/contest. Granted, those two games were against San Jose State and a Bruins defense that just gave up 44 to Utah, but they're moving the ball much more effectively than in '06. (Remember Stanford lost to that San Jose State team last season.) 3. If you look at Oregon's stats, the Ducks have not steamrolled opponents this season by blowing them away in total yards. Rather, good coaching has resulted in the Ducks converting nearly 50% of their third downs and scoring on 80% of their trips to the red zone. I will now refer you back to number 1. If Bellotti spent this week watching Cal game tape, expect those great percentages to dwindle. 4. Harbaugh seems to have the Cardinal believing. He turned USD into a quick winner. Stanford improved from Week 1 to Week 2. Not saying the Cardinal will make a bowl this season, but it's looking as if they won't be the total embarrasment they were under the Teevens and Harris regimes. Problem with all this is: the game is pretty much at a neutral site because nobody will show up, Stanford still can't play defense, and Bellotti's teams rarely lose the little games. I don't really expect the Cardinal to pull off a mega-upset, but if I'm going to call one this week, what the hell, this one'll do.

RDF, I don't know if I could ever reach the eloquent fury you show in your posts, but here's a try:
I have never been less enthused about the state of A&M football as I have been tonight. The only comparable feeling I have after tonight's debacle in the OB was after serving as an eyewitness to Duke's dismemberment of Georgetown back in January 2004.
1. Don't be fooled into thinking this Miami team isn't as good as it looked tonight. Their o-line --which included a pair of Texans -- drilled the A&M d-line into submission. Conversely, their D-line set the tone on the very first drive. Their guys lined up and blew A&M's guys off the LOS with purpose.
2. Franchione is now responsible for some of A&M's most embarrassing losses -- a pair of drubbings at Tech in Lubbock, 77-0, the 06 Holiday Bowl, the 05 Cotton Bowl, the 17-16 field goal fest on national tv against OU, the disaster in Boulder in 05, Iowa freakin' State, the outright collapse against Nebraska last season, and this shellacking at the hands of a better motivated and talented Miami team.
3. I sympathize with Lane being frustrated about not getting carries, but honestly, stop complaining, Jorvorskie. The fact that Lane looks like an intemperate adolescent on the sideline is exhibit #1 that this coaching staff does not instill the fear of God Almighty and all His Avenging Angels into the players.
Everybody here wants to tag Miami as Thug U, but the reality is, you look at Randy Shannon, and you hear his life story, and you know this man will not put up with any B.S. from his players. Because he is a hardcore guy who had to endure family members dying. He pulled himself out of Liberty City and won 3 national championships as a player, assistant and coordinator. You see Shannon, and he has presence. He showed supreme confidence tonight by not even using his headset. He coaches from the front, more so than Coker or Davis and even more so than Jimmah and Erickson. Why? Because he was there once before. The Canes would go out and do ANYTHING Shannon asked to bring victory.
By those factors alone he is twice the coach A&M's current $2M man is.
4.The sad thing is that it's not even October yet and A&M is looking down the barrel of multiple conference losses because Franchione and his staff show no offensive creativity and betray no confidence in the very talent it recruited to advance A&M football.
The only school getting less for its investment right now is Notre Dame. Michigan would crush A&M by six touchdowns based on what I saw tonight.
And you know what really is disappointing? A&M does have a lot of talent that is getting devolved into football purgatory because this staff has shown no leadership or confidence. McGee is locked into an option offense and his skills are currently inverse to his heart. Lane shows no more maturity now than he did when he was a freshman. We recruited 3 dozen wideouts who don't even see a pass thrown their way. And, A&M has an All-American potential at tight end who is going to go pro after this season to save his marketable value to the NFL.

Javorski Lane's body is a disgrace---he shouldn't be whining about anything--and I don't think it's "cute" how everyone was calling him "Hamburglar". What the hell goes on during offseason conditioning? If a slob like that is allowed to take the field and play-it sends a bad message to rest of team.
I expected more of a game from Aggies--and was disappointed--but then again I think it's karma coming back to Fran for how he left Alabama--not that he left--but the cowardly way he departed. Also-anyone who employs Gary Darnell as a DC is not solving a problem--they are just patching it up--Darnell is awful.
What I liked about A&M--Johnson, the true FR QB--he's going to be a great player and I thought it was pathetic how Flutie and James blew off his last play--that was impressive--he's got all kinds of talent--and he should be RS or playing--I appreciate Stephen McGee's toughness-but he's yet to prove to me that he can throw the football accurately down the field.
BTW-Miami's defense might be back--but that offense still sucks. Direct snaps to RB's is not innovative. Kyle Wright's "punt passes" are comical--and won't work against better defenses. This team has a long ways to go--and only thing that has Miami fans a bit more optimistic is that it's nice to see some aggression/attitude from the team. I took tonight's game as a step in right direction for that reason--but performance wise-those were two mediocre football teams out there.

direct snaps is the new fad this year... A&M did it too Clemson has done it with Spiller and Davis all year too Direct snaps are the single wing--it's not innovative--and why anyone hasn't figured out 99% of the RB's who get the ball aren't going to throw is beyond me? Darren McFadden is the only guy I've seen throw the FB--I know Florida has kids capable of doing it--Harvin, Fayson, but you have QB's for a reason and the minute Graig Cooper, Michael Goodson, or CJ Spiller want to take a shotgun snap and throw--go ahead--I'll take my chances as a defender. Why don't more teams blitz the minute these teams go to this set? Force them to throw or stuff them in backfield? It's like defenses are so poorly coached and play on their heels so much they act like you can't attack someone who is trying to give you different looks. Isn't that job of a DC? If I'm a DC--the first thing I do is blitz-and the 2nd I do is beat the snot out of the QB who is spread out wide--I'd tell my DB to go up and smack him around--it's a running play, so he's a blocker--and if he's a non athletic QB--you know play is not going his side--so that should tip you off on which direction the play is going/takes away an entire side of the field--if they want to run behind their QB--punish him. The idea is to hit people on every play and beat them down. If you let the offenses dictate everything--you have bad defenses.

I was wondering, if Irish fans can blame Willingham for their team's 0-3 start, can Aggie fans somehow blame Carl Torbush for TAMU giving up 24 in the first half?
Whoever's fault it is, that game was over after the first two series. A&M's first three plays were totally blown up, and when Miami got the football the Aggies couldn't buy a 3rd down stop.
Speaking of, something I saw multiple times last night that bothers me: A&M players making a good hit after a Miami player made a first down, then getting all excited about the hit. Perhaps the rules of football need to be re-explained to the Aggies. Points are given for advancing the ball over the goal-line, not for pad-popping. When the other team is in the middle of a sustained drive, you are not allowed to pound your chest. Even worse was that aside from those moments, team body language was never good on the A&M side. Heads down, looking as if they couldn't wait for the game to be over.
Miami coaching staff had a great game plan and played this one well. Cool to see Shannon giving the defense the right adjustments when A&M threw a new formation out on the field. Patrick Nix called a good game from the booth as well. Also, this 'Canes team was not the one that showed up in Norman two weeks ago, and that's as good a measure as any that this coaching staff is doing its job well. Still a lot of room for improvement, but Miami appears to be rising from the ashes of '06.

As a Miami fan--the only thing that has changed is attitude. Defensively they moved Randy Phillips who was abused by Malcolm Kelly at CB to Safety. The offense still sucks. Well let me say this--the running game is better but the passing game still sucks. If Canes were playing any team in the ACC last night they'd have struggled to score 10 points, and reason I say that is everyone knows that you blitz Kyle Wright--he'll look at the rush and make mistakes. Texas A&M is a disgrace. They promote a slob at RB--that Lane kid has had 2 years to get into shape in the offseason and he gets heavier. It's made worse when people say "Look at the quick feet for a big man...."-how about bringing up the fact he'd be more effective if he was fit/well conditioned? Francione's passing game is less sophisticated then that of a Pee Wee league team--it was awful. I really liked Jerrod Johnson-and felt his one series he showed more skills as a passer then McGee has in 2+ years. McGee is known for being tough and a good runner--well he acted like Drew Tate last night after plays and just had horrible body language--and as the leader--this carried over to others. Michael Goodson is only guy on that offense outside of FR QB I'd want. A&M WR's were so bad, they made Miami's look good. Their hyped OL got destroyed. BTW--how poorly coached are you when you continue to have OL fielding the ball and attempting to run? If I'm Oklahoma--I'd try to put 100 on them this year after Francione making comments in offseason about their NCAA infractions. That got back to Stoops--and from what I've seen of both teams--it's possible that an ass kicking is coming similar to what happened--if Kyle Wright was Sam Bradford, Miami would've had 4 more TD's in passing game alone last night. My question for Aggie fans--how do you have such a bad defense with the amount of athletes in TX? I mean that DL sucked, the LB's were slow, and the DB's were bad tacklers, and couldn't cover--other then that--they were great. Shannon has installed attitude and toughness again. That offense is 3 years away from being effective though--Miami QB's are awful-and their best QB the frosh Robert Marve is out with injury he suffered in car accident. So this year is lost for him. We will see what fans think after Miami loses about 4/5 more games this year--and with Kyle Wright passing--it's going to happen--unless the defense just overwhelms people-which they will have to do.

The worst use of the direct snap I've ever seen at Clemson was when Justin Miller was put in on offense one time at RB and the ball was snapped to him...
Woody Dantzler at QB was essentially running a single wing offense with the possibility of the pass.
The fact that Spiller played some QB in HS has been reported in game stories mentioning that formation, not sure how much of that is just to give other teams something to think about and how much could be legit possibilities.
Furman stopped Spiller for short gains or losses a couple of times it was snapped to him, but honestly he looks like he's doing too much east-west trying to break a big run so far this year instead of just going for what is there. That might have been because of who the opposition was the past 2 weeks. Of course, there was virtually no rushing in the La-Monroe game with Harper throwing 5 TDs before there was a rushing one.

I am not sure if Wolverines win--but they've got a shot due to the play of Anthony Morelli--who is just shaky as it gets behind center. They've also played a common opponent-and Michigan dominated ND from get go--with a true FR QB playing--Penn State was in a game for a Half--and that is despite PSU dominating ND's overmatched offense--but who hasn't stopped ND offense? This game is much more even then PSU fans think. We'll see.

WHAT? Penn State didn't have as much to play for? In football you have to win every game--and that statement is just odd to be honest. So I guess Penn State didn't need to win the only non conference game that had any chance of being decent--with the rest of their cupcake schedule. Michigan was upset in week one--no doubt. They got it handed to them by a good Oregon team--a much more talented team then people think because most fans--especially Big 10 morons look down upon the Pac 10 despite the fact they usually own the Big 10 come Rose Bowl time. Michigan played two teams that run the spread and were beaten/destroyed. They played a conventional ND team--and shut them out. ND didn't drive, didn't do anything--at any time in the game. Penn State has Anthony Morelli--who can lose any game--he's just not very good. He'll keep Michigan in the game himself.

If you have MASN or an ESPN Plus feed and you like train wrecks...
...it's getting a little awkward in the Land of Wide Open Secondaries as Louisville, something like a 40 point favorite, is down 31-14 at home to the Cuse.
Although Cuse is totally cheating by using this "gimmick" called the "play action pass". Kragthorpe looks...perplexed.

Wofford up 10 on App State - Michigan could have a loss to a I-AA team that lost to Wofford after today.

How in the world did Cuse just beat Louisville? How and why did that just happen?
In other news... it seems as if not even a Regis Philbun pep-talk can get ND a win!
