Now don't be asking for columns. There were columns after we fired Esherick and when we hired Thompson. But before that there were no columns. From the my first day as a student at Gtown until this very day, a span of 7.5 years, there have been columns in the Washington Post on the Hoyas just twice really. Once when JT retired, and then just recently with the Esherick/JT III switch. Aside from that, we shared some column space with Maryland and other tourney events during our 2001 tournament run. That's been it. There's just too much sports to cover in DC, not to mention that Post coverage tends to be more national in scope than a lot of papers. Dick Heller has written columns on the Hoyas for the WTimes that had nothing to do with ESh's firing, Maryland games, 2001 tournament, etc.

My guess is that Camille Powell and her editors are really lazy and assume that the vast majority of Post readers do not read the Times. This article is a complete and total ripoff of the Times piece. I hope that Camille attended the same interview as Barker did when all these quotes were given. . I strongly assume that your assumption about attending the same interview session is correct, but it took longer for the Post to publish than the Times. In NYC, we often see the same background story -- be it the Yanks, Jets, knicks, whomever -- appear in all the major dailies. NYTimes, Post, Daily News, Newsday and the newark paper. The teams set up interviews/stories per day and the papers basically cover the same things -- pretty boring if you read more than one paper. That said, Camille did get interesting extra info into her story, even though it was later.

Big Dog, I think you are giving the Post a "free pass" on that one. Their news reporting may be more national -- like the NY Times, but their sports coverage is not. What other major paper in America devotes so much space to UMD??? not to mention the Redskins, wizards and others? They just don't like GU and we don't have enough support, alumni and fans to force the post to change their coverage priorities.

From George Solomon's column in Sunday's WP:
• Hot basketball team: The Wizards. Best three-month run in 20 years, or since Gus Williams, Jeff Ruland, Rick Mahorn and Jeff Malone. So long ago, Gilbert Arenas was 3 and hadn't yet learned to take off his shirt.
• Feisty basketball team: Georgetown men.
• Improving basketball team: No. 15 Maryland women.
• Struggling men's basketball teams: Maryland and Virginia.
• League on ice: NHL. TEXT

I'm pretty sure Wallace can live with the players, but he's severely hampered by rules. This includes the shoes, warmups, pre-game meals etc. not being free.

Does Wallace at least have some sort of scholarship/financial aid this year? Can't imagine his folks would be too excited about having to pay for everything, especially because of the time commitment to bball.

Like every other student at Georgetown, Wallace would receive a financial aid package commensurate with his need if he is, in fact, still a walk-on. That is to say that the financial aid office would do the calculations taking into account his family's resources and determine their ability to pay, then come up with a package that includes grant and low-interest federally guaranteed loans to make up the remainder- every student at Georgetown is admitted without consideration of their ability to pay and everyone who enrolls is guaranteed that type of need-based aid.
That said, and given that there were open scholarships this year I am not convinced that JW is not already on scholarship. I do not know what the implications are there for the old 5/8 rule, since invalidated but in effect at least during recruiting last year, but with Causey's late transfer there should have been at least one open 'ship.

As I said on this thread, or one of the others, as far as I know, Jon "Little General" Wallace is on scholarship.
