Here's a quick recap of the day's action
1. LSU-Auburn was one helluva football game. Tip my hat to both teams and just wish I could see that game again.
2. Florida found a way to win and credit them--they showed the toughness they often lacked in past.
3. Oklahoma was terrible on defense but ROBBED. Not only did #23 Allen Patrick recover the onsides kick, but the ball was touched by Oregon prior to going 10 yards. Terrible job of screwing kids over by officials. Disgusting.
4. Nebraska embarrassed themselves by not trying to win, but rather trying to avoid a humiliating defeat. Which in turn will lead to USC pounding them next year in Lincoln to everyone's "surprise". How does this make your program better? Nebraska did the same thing against Oklahoma 2 years ago when White was a SR QB-and it's very chicken--you know what. DISGRACE to the game and if I were a Husker fan, I'd apologize to anyone who watched that game and traveled to game to watch it--it was a USC controlled scrimmage. Trojans can't make Nebraska play--or attempt to play to win.
5. Miami must fire Coker now--if they don't he might hang on because the ACC STINKS--it's beyond awful.
6. Does anyone now believe me that Miami-FSU was NOT great defense but rather lousy offense? Thought so--those two programs are garbage right now.
7. THANK YOU MICHIGAN!!! God Bless you Wolverines. I knew Michigan was more talented but thought Carr would screw it up--and to be honest the final score wasn't that close when I watched plays.
8. Charlie Weis will be dead in 2/3 years if he doesn't improve his conditioning/health. He should be nowhere near a sideline until he can be healthy--seeing guys like him and Mark Mangino is not good--they could drop dead during a game.
9. Ryan Powdrell's injury was so gruesome I turned away from that game for 2 series--after seeing his entire lower leg pointing a different direction from where his upper leg was--I about puked. Hope the kid is alright and nothing related to football--just hope he can walk again.
10. This is the worst Miami team I've seen that is not on probation. Coker is terrible--the talent is missing, and yet I feel they can win the ACC---which is all that needs to be said on the level of play in that league.
Happy for TigerHoya--that was a great win and always fun to watch the clueless old fool Bowden lose. ;D

3. Oklahoma was terrible on defense but ROBBED. Not only did #23 Allen Patrick recover the onsides kick, but the ball was touched by Oregon prior to going 10 yards. Terrible job of screwing kids over by officials. Disgusting. You forgot that awful pass interference call on Oregon's go-ahead drive (ball CLEARLY tipped by an Oklahoma d-lineman before the Sooner d-back LEGALLY tackled the intended Oregon receiver). Oklahoma was screwed twice in the last minute (of course, they have to block better on that last field goal attempt). HORRIBLE job by the PAC-10 refs on that both. This has to be the straw that breaks the camel's back as far as NCAA replay goes. They need a standardized rule enforced by NCAA refs... no more of these conference-only refs. Sure, you can have these NCAA refs work specific conferences/regions, but they have to be standardized. These variations from conference-to-conference are ridiculous in today's game. "It can't just be fair, it has to look fair."

Noticed during the BC-BYU game that the replay guy in the booth was ACC while the field refs were MWC....

RDF, i am now completely convinced Coker needs to go fast. I started watchin the game, and after Miami's first score and then the fumble recovery, i thought to myself: damn, we gonna blow this team out. Only problem is we never scored again. How does a Miami team only score seven pts? No talent on the offensive side of the ball, i guess. So i guess the bigger question at this point is who takes over for Coker? I honestly have no idea, but, would be interested in hearing some opinions.

Post on a Miami board says Coker was fired and Shannon named interim coach - supposedly according to Fox Sports Radio.... sounds BS to me since there's no corroboration anywhere else yet.

If there's going to be a mid-season firing at Miami, now is the time to do it, with an off week for the 'Canes this Saturday and Houston, UNC and FIU visiting the Orange Bowl the following three weeks.
But would a mid-season Coker canning really do much for Miami? The 'Canes and their comfy conference schedule still have an outside shot at getting to the ACC title game and winning their league. I think it's more likely Coker rights the ship than Shannon were he to take over head coaching duties. Firing Coker would also be a seeming confirmation of what the national media has been hollering: Miami is a program in decline. For a program whose success is based on its repuation as a dominant football team, that is somewhat of a dangerous thing to do.

2. Florida found a way to win and credit them--they showed the toughness they often lacked in past. Gators found a way to win, with a tip o' the cap to Erik Ainge for mucking things up in the final minutes on the Florida side of the field. 3. Oklahoma was terrible on defense but ROBBED. Not only did #23 Allen Patrick recover the onsides kick, but the ball was touched by Oregon prior to going 10 yards. Terrible job of screwing kids over by officials. Disgusting. Second year in a row OU has been robbed by replay. Last year it was in Lubbock against Texas Tech when Taurean Henderson scored a phantom TD on the game's final play. I just watched my recording of this game, and it seems to me Nebraska stuck with a bad game plan -- running the football -- for too long. Bill Callahan obviously did not pay attention for the first two weeks of the season, when Zac Taylor was throwing deep balls with precision. It was clear that running the football was not going to work after the first quarter, yet Nebraska stuck with it until the half, squandering some good first half chances in the process. Once Callahan finally let Taylor throw the ball vertically in the third quarter, the Huskers actually scored a TD. I really think Nebraska could have made this a closer game had Callahan and Co. made better adjustments more quickly. While I'm preaching to the Nebraska coaches, let me say I never, never, want to see another delayed screen to the running back on third down again. 7. THANK YOU MICHIGAN!!! God Bless you Wolverines. I knew Michigan was more talented but thought Carr would screw it up--and to be honest the final score wasn't that close when I watched plays. Look for Big Blue to roll for the next few weeks. Mike Hart looked sensational, and Chad Henne actually looked comfortable in the pocket in a big game for once. Extra comments/rants: Why is Kenny Irons not being mentioned in the Heisman race? He's going to have a few huge games this season. Big win for TCU, but I doubt the Frogs make a BCS bowl. The Frogs always manage to screw up one game (SMU last season, Southern Miss in 2003), and they have a huge target on their backs after running the table in the MWC last season. Iowa looked okay in their game against ISU. Iowa-Ohio State is in Iowa City in a couple weeks, and if anyone can stop the Buckeyes before OSU-Michigan, the Hawkeyes probably have the best shot. The Chuck Amato Firing Countdown is nearing zero. Things are still going wonderfully wrong at Texas A&M under Dennis Franchione. The Aggies needed a goal-line stand to salvage a win over the Black Knights of Army Saturday night. Tip for Coach Fran: perhaps playing something other than the worst non-conference schedule in college football might motivate your team and eliminate some sloppiness.

RDF--did you notice Leak slide on the 3rd down in the 4th quarter short of the first down again? Not surprising to me that Tebow came in for the first down immediately after. Though, at least the announcers called Leak out on it being clueless.

Groh's seat is getting warm too after VA lost homecoming to W. Michigan.
Amato is toast; Cowher's wife is already living in Raleigh. Rumors are some big money Duke alums might be trying to lure Spurrier back to Durham.
SC had to stop Wofford (they fumbled deep in SC territory) on a drive late in the game to prevent going to OT with a I-AA team. I bet they're wishing now that Holtz hadn't run Kenny Irons off (Lou pegged his good fortunes to problem child Demetrius Summers who was dismissed from the team after Spurrier became coach.)

I doubt anyone cares, but Stanford opened its newly remodeled Stadium on Saturday, and proceeded to get absolutely thrashed by Navy 37-9. The Cardinal are now 0-3, which includes two blowouts and a loss to lowly San Jose State last week.
A little bit on the new Stanford Stadium: it was completed for $90 million in less than nine months, and brought a capacity of 85,000 that was miles from the field down to 50,000 and right on top of the action. The sad part is that the opener didn't even sell out, drawing not even 45,000. Furthermore, the Stanford band wasn't even there, as they are suspended from the school for vandalizing their band shack. The Navy band actually did the halftime show on Saturday and even played the Stanford fight song (if you could call it that) on several occasions.
Overall, though the new stadium looks great, bad time to be a Stanford fan. The Cardinal seem well on their way to their fifth consecutive bowless season and their fifth consecutive loss to Cal in the Big Game.

Though, at least the announcers called Leak out on it being clueless. Is it wrong that I immediately thought of RDF when that happened? I was watching the game with some friends of mine from home who went to UF and are huge Gator fans, and their reaction to that play was priceless...suffice it to say they're even more sick of seeing him do it than RDF is. BTW I liked the use of Tebow...he'd be awesome running the GU offense. ;D Except it never fails to amaze me how a team will bring in a player 4-5 times in a game to do the SAME EXACT THING and the other team never bothers to adjust.(*) Like, was there any remote possibility that Tebow was gonna throw the ball? (*Except if it's painfully obvious and in fact a ridiculous ploy to get a player touches/placate him/prevent him from going pro. See Coker, Larry and Hester, Devin.)

Wow, what a great weekend for college football.
I made the venture up to Knoxville and we obviously had a blast, although I did lose $50 on the Gators minus the 3 poins. I guess I should have taken the money line.
Between the 3 plus hours in the car between Atlanta and Knoxville and the tailgating before our game, I didn't get to watch as much of the other games as I would have liked to. But from everything I saw in highlites as well as the portions of the games that I did see, it was certainly an exciting afternoon. I did catch the end of that Oregon-Oklahoma game and it sure looked to me like an Oregon player touched the ball first and before it went ten yards, but as the rule is written the video evidence was not indisputable just because of where the cameras were positioned. You sure hate to see a game hinge on something like that. I think it was very clear to anyone paying attention that the oregon playing looked to touch the ball first and that it almost certainly hadn't gone the necessary 10 yards yet. Unfortunately, it is almost like the difference between a civil case and a criminal case. The preponderance of the evidence clearly went one way, but indisputable video evidence is more akin to beyond all reasonable doubt.
I also caught the last 10 minutes of the Auburn-LSU game. I wish I had seen that whole game. In any case, that game hinged on a questionable call as well and I was very surprised that they overturned the call. It too was close and could have gone either way but it seemed like the contact came before the deflection. I haven't heard an official explanation, but I am guessing that the official on the field called the interference but didn't see the deflection. I don't know the exact procedure, but if he saw the deflection and the contact but made the judgement call that it was interference in live speed, I don't think they would have overturned the call. It is a tough one either way, but I can't feel too much sympathty as I have been on the receiving end of far more blatant rulings, and in fairness we have all had some go oour way as well.
As to the Gator game, I think many of you make good points. Yes, we were all irate with Leak and his slide. He also made one very bad read/throw but he also did a lot of good things. We discovered the first string back finally in DeShawn Wynn. We were strong on both sides of the line of scrimmage and out muscled both of the UT lines. On a negative note, I always thought that Chris Hetland being on the Lou Groza watch list was a joke. Yes, he did hit 13-16 field goals last season, but he has a weak leg and far too many of his kicks last year were relative chip shots with little pressure. Though we discovered a running back, I think we also discovered that we don't have a kicker in tough pressure situations. Lastly, we had been hearing about freshman Brandon James and we finally got to see some of his magic. Even though it was called back by penalty, his 86 yard weaving punt return was special. He didn't just make one guy miss and then out run the rest. He had to show vision multiple times as well as the ability to use both his blocks and his speed. Earlier in the game he almost broke another one back, were it not for a shoestring tackle by the punter of all people. The bottom line is that it was a tough victory over a quality opponoent on the road, and it was definitely a game we would have lost under Zook or even under Meyer in his first season.
And lastly, yes RDF you are right. Miami-FSU was bad offense as much as good defense. I honestly thought it was a little of both, but I guess I was wrong. I'm not losing any sleep over it though. Watching those two sinking ships is rather entertaining.

Rumors are some big money Duke alums might be trying to lure Spurrier back to Durham. I think Groh's situation is similar to Coker's: UVA hasn't had a terrible record on his watch, but the way the team has been unprepared and sloppy at times troubles fans and boosters. I do wonder if he gets a free pass this season because of his coordinators leaving. I would really like to see Spurrier return to Duke, but I doubt it will happen. The man in the visor needs to win in the SEC to stroke his ego. Besides, he gets better pay, better players, better facilities, and certainly better fans at S. Carolina. I can see why those rich Dookies want to lure him away though -- Duke has been putting decent money into football facilities and has seen no return -- time to invest in something that will produce wins.

Yeah, the coordinator changes usually buy a troubled coach a year or two if they fire them - guess there's a similar grace period if they leave for head coaching jobs.
One troubling analogy to FSU and every other nepotistic situation - Groh's son is one of the coordinators now.

So the OU president wants the Oregon game taken off the books and the Pac-10 officials who worked the game suspended for the season. I know this is a big deal, but this story reminds me of the famous quote by a former OU president: "We are working hard to create a University that the football team can be proud of." sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2593369

Still waiting on the ACC to follow suit and suspend Ron Cherry's crew. They already apologized to Clemson for the refs missing a block in the back on the 96 yard kickoff return by BC to start the 2nd half.

Weren't they the Miami-FSU "We're gonna do a replay for the hell of it, we're tired" crew? Is anything in the ACC good this year? Next thing we're gonna find out the FSU Cowgirls have been replaced by the Golden Girls or something.
