I disagree.
The Curse, as such, is that the Sawx will never win the World Series again.
This is still intact. Just cause the Yanks couldn't be the party-spoilers again doesn't mean it still can't come to pass.

i think the confidence thing applies to the fans, but not the teams. the red sox weren't scared of the yankees last year and pushed them to the brink. this year they added Curt Schilling and Keith Foulke to a team that was 3 outs away, and the yankees got worse in the offseason with the departures of wells, clemens and pettitte, coupled with their subsequent replacements of Vazquez and Brown. our lack of quality starters led to a completely exhausted bullpen by season's end. we are now reaping what we've sown. as far as the curse talk...c'mon. i don't think the yankees will be shook the next time they face the sox in a big spot, even if the Sox win the Series this year. i don't think the Sox were ever shook playing these Yankees. the fans [and dan shaugnessy] keep this Curse talk alive. and if they lose the Series we'll have to hear about it another 86 years. The Curse, which of course doesn't exist, had two elements; 1. the curse as seen from the Yankees perspective and their subsequent confidence and 2. the Red Sox view of the same and lack of. They were equally important elements. The first one is now gone for good- or at least for many years. The second one remains, but regardless of what happens in the WS, a big part of what we call the curse is already gone.

Agreed that the Yanks made some really bad moves last winter and this one had better yield better fruit, especially pitching.
But the Curse still lives.
DEATH....... TAXES....... THE CURSE!

The best thing the Yanks could do is trade Jeter...seriously he is an albatross financially and doesn't get it done on the field. Take a page from Epsteins book and get young, hungry cheap talent for your marquee player while you can....Talk about overrated.
Also, here's my guide to shellshocked Yankee fans. I know you guys haven't gone through this before. It's an odd feeling. That hollow emptiness. Feels like you're hungover. That gentle, misting fog fills the brain and you have that ghostlimb-sensation, an amputated limb, long gone that seems to keeps throbbing with pain. You reflexively check the sportssection only to nearly vomit. A cold shiver down your spine. You try to stay positive and focus on the good times in the season and how much heart it took to get there. You brush off the obnoxious Sox fans who let you have it in the office, some of them don't even follow the team all year, but man they are riled up now. You just zone them out. Shut down your senses and try to focus on the NFL. For the next few weeks you have to avoid ESPN, Fox, the Post, anything that might refer to the WS...I suggest avoiding the media for at least a month. Don't even pick up a paper. Then around Christmas, you can start postulating on the big moves. Start considering trades taht should be made and FA that should be aquired. Start slowly. Imagine just one player coming to the team. Then imagine that player having a career year with you guys. For example, last year I began with dreams of Manny and Vlad playing in the outfield together...hopefully this kind of dream will keep the coals burning through the winter and drive you into optimistic delusion come May.

. . .first of all, the best night of MY life was an evening I spent in East St. Louis, but we all have our priorities.
Secondly, a heartfelt congratulations to the Red Sox (if not the Red Sox fans - if the team behaved the way the fans do, they would have been swept without so much as a whimper). I do not need to reiterate my feelings about baseball in general, but I'll be honest, I was sucked in. Didn't want to turn my TV off, cringed when the Yankees got two on in the 9th against Foulke in Game 6, cheered for Tim Wakefield when he stood arms raised on the mound last night during the celebration staring out at his Waterloo: the left field upper deck. . .yeah, I'll admit it, I was fished in by all of it. DFW said it best, WOW.
I still place baseball last among sports I like to watch, but I have to say the last few nights have been more than baseball games. It always feels great to be witness to sports history, even if I really don't like either team.
I will also say this. There is no question, NO QUESTION, that the Yanks-Sox is THE compelling story of the postseason. But it is truly criminal how ALL of the national media have completely ignored the baseball games going on in that other league. I've seen some pretty great baseball in the middle of the country in addition to the theatrics on the East Coast. They should be ashamed of themselves, all of the talking sports heads.
I think everyone thought the same thing last year, that the World Series would be anti-climactic after the ALCS, but luckily the N.L. never got that memo. I hope the same thing does not happen to the Sox, not because I like them or their cross-bearing followers, but only because I believe that their achievement over the last few days should be rewarded with the final prize (like the Highlander).
I love the city of St. Louis (and its small neighbor to the East, as I believe I've mentioned), and I'd love to see them win, but I have to admit, I think the Sox really deserve it.
Of course, with a presidential election less than two weeks away, it might be interesting to have a team from Massachusetts and a team from Texas battling it out.
Anyway, just a few ramblings during lunch. Congrats again to the Red Sox. Wouldn't it be funny if this win sparked an 80'something-year Yankee title draught? Probably a little too much to hope for, I guess. Then again, I never thought my dream of Notre Dame football completely sucking would last quite this many years, so who knows?

The Red Sox and their wretched fans deserve nothing. Any team that sells off Babe Ruth deserves whatever Curse that happens to be placed on it.
This Yankee fan has just become a HUGE Cardinals and Astros fan!

YB...I smell some sour grapes in your whine*. Just tip your cap and call the Red Sox your daddies until next April, when it all doesn't matter anymore.
*Pun intended

Actually, It's not so much that I desperately want the Yanks to win anymomre.... I like for them to do well, but I do rather enjoy sadistically torturing the Red Sox fans, it's a favorite diversion of mine, so I look forward to continuing that after Roger Clemens no-hits them in the 7th game at Fenway to give the Astros the Series.

During this off season I expect the Yankees to give us about $60 million additional reasons to hate them all the more. Look for them to add Beltran, one or two starters and a second baseman, and have a payroll that is pushing $250 million.
How sweet is it for we Yankee haters to know that, when talk of great collapses arises, this Yankee team will be at the forefront of the discussion. I LOVE IT!

Oh that's fine YB.
We'll all love it when you sign Pedro for $20 million in the off season. Trust me you'll love the 2005 Pedro experience- those heart palpatations and sweaty palms in the first inning. He could give up 15 runs or retire the side...who knows which one...anyones' guess!!!

Oh yes- you and your 5 World Series rings- if they're not all rusted by the slow decay of time- can laugh at us and our 26 glimmering, shiny rings- one for each finger and toe, each ear, each nostril and each eyebrow.

If you really want to count up the amount of money the Sawx have cumulatively spent on payroll since THEIR last title, we'd be happy to.

Boy it must feel good to point back to all those championships. I guess they've made you really secure in your team and it's identity. You don't sound threatened or shaken at all...

Is this conversation over yet? haha
Can't wait till baseball season is over so that we can focus on the truly important things in life, like Georgetown Basketball.

can we get an adjusted for inflation tally for the red sox's expenditures since their last title...sucka? hats off to the red sox, they were the better team, but don't play the poor boy here. you have the 2nd highest payroll in the league, granted by about 50 million to the yanks, but you're about 30 million above anaheim. sox fans complaining about the yankee payroll is absurd to me when everyone else in the league can point at them and say the same thing. you're not the expos or the royals. $1 billion dollars spent since the last championship...and counting. Suckas

Good point, Borat. Yeckshemesh. (I know I misspelled that, my apologies).
People outside of NE or NY have to realize the rest of the country dislikes them about equally. They Yanks have more historical dislike, but as Borat pointed out, for the Sox to play the "underdog" role these days (especially in a series they were favored to win) is a bit much. Royals, Twins, Brewers fans (and the list goes on and on) have no patience for either team to spend more than double their teams' payrolls, let alone listen to a bunch of fans whine about how fate conspires against them, they get the short end of the stick in everything, blah blah blah. With $130 million in payroll, I'd HOPE you make the World Series (hear that, George?), especially when so many teams are so far below that.
GO HOYAS!!! KNOCK STUPID BASEBALL OFF THE BOARD!!!

again, if the yanks have 180 million reasons to hate them, how come the sox don't have 130 millions reasons to do so as well? both their payrolls are astronomical relative to the rest of the league. that said, the sox spent their money more wisely. yanks may or may not add beltran, but i think miugel cairo stays put at 2nd and they try and shore up the staff. if the sox lose the series, i'd count on pedro in pinstripes...which makes me want to vomit. more lkely they'll make another run at Big Unit involving Vazquez and some prospects [which i think would be dumb...vazquez could be great if he had a decent pitching coach...mel is so poop]. possibly bring back the Boomer. i heard rumors of a Tom Gordon to Oakland deal, as they still need a closer, but not sure how much truth there is to that During this off season I expect the Yankees to give us about $60 million additional reasons to hate them all the more. Look for them to add Beltran, one or two starters and a second baseman, and have a payroll that is pushing $250 million. I would just like to note for the record -- to Jack in particular -- that I was not the one who initiated the call for an end to baseball discussions...this time around.
I'm not positive, but I believe that might be another first in HoyaTalk history.
;D
Now I'm going to go watch some hock....awwww, CRAPCRAPCRAP! ! ! !

And I would add to the record that I only posted once in any of the threads about baseball, and that was only to set the record straight for a willfully ignorant poster. It might also be because I was not able to summon the ability to type until the late afternoon yesterday. In any event, I have got plenty of places to celebrate with my Sox fan friends, but only here to deal with the haters. Back to Hoya Talk, whatever that may be right now. I will rejoin the conversation after the parade.
