****Knicks 96 vs. 76ers 88 11/9/04**** Sweetney must have been in serious foul trouble as he only played 17 minutes and had 5 fouls. However, he still shot 4-4 from the field and 1-2 from the line for a total of 9 points. He pulled down 3 rebounds, had a steal and a block shot (and 5 turnovers ). Junkyard played only 3 minutes, scored a point and had a steal and a block. Iverson had 29 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds but apparently also had 9? turnovers, ouch. box score: www.nba.com/games/20041109/PHINYK/boxscore.html

As the Georgetown Hoyas are my favorite team in the world, followed by the NY Knicks, I cannot express how excited I am about big Mike being here in NYC, and in sharp contrast to last year, being a pivotal part of the team. (With that said, it's also great to have the JYD, even though we lost Dikembe and Othella.)
As far as tonight's game, Wilkens realized that he better get both Sweetney and Ariza in the game earlier, as they definitely bring tons of energy (and arguably are better then those players starting in front of them). Although Sweets only played 17 minutes, his name was mentioned consistently throughout the game, and he was making an impact on the defensive end, perhaps even more than on the offensive end at first. He got called for a couple of offensive fouls (which I believe must have been tallied into his turnovers, including a travel), but he played in control, shot great, made the extra pass, and was a presence on the boards. He definitely contributed to the run that broke the game open for the Knicks, and as the season progresses, I would be surprised if he didn't average 25/+ minutes per game. In fact, it's obviously way too premature, but I think Sweetney could compete for two awards, both the sixth man of the year, and most improved player.
Anyways, Sweetney, despite his injured thumb, is establishing himself as a force down low, and a solid contributor on all fronts. He will have his share of trouble defending certain players, especially when him and Kurt are asked to play up front together, but I think that his work ethic and knowledge of the game will pay huge dividends.
One last thing. Last year, during the end of the regular season, and during the playoffs, Sweetney started to get real burn. I told a friend of mine, over the phone, that Sweetney demanded a double team and was almost unstoppable if he's got his back to the basket against any single defender. He is a Sweetney fan, but not a Hoya, and thought that my comment was dellusional. He's like, he's not even your best low-post threat on a terrible Knicks front court, and calling him unstoppable is crazy. Obviously, it may have seemed crazy, and I am known to get carried away at times, but the main point that I was trying to make, and which Sweets seems to be proving true, is that when he gets in his comfort zone, with a single defender (I don't care if it's KG), Sweetney is a legitimate threat, and in many cases, demands a double team, whether it is college or the NBA.
Prove me right big Mike. GO HOYAS!!!

Mixed bag last night for Sweets in the Knicks win over Philly. 9 points (4-4 FG) 3 boards, a block and a steal in 17 minutes, but 5 turnovers in that same short amount of time.

****Knicks 110 vs. Clippers 96 11/12/04**** Sweets just misses a double-double as he scores 14 pts and pulls down 9 rebounds in 31 minutes of play. He also chipped in 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Nice solid game Mike! Also of note, The Junkyard Dog saw 19 minutes of play and had 12 pts, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. See Knicks, you let the Hoyas play and you win, don't forget it!!! box score: www.nba.com/games/20041112/LACNYK/boxscore.html

By the way, anyone ever seen these Jerome Williams highlights from his Georgetown days? The picture is very small but if your vision is still good you can watch some great plays involving JYD, Don Reid, Iverson and company. This is from Jerome's website, just click on the little picture that has "college highlights" written above it. www.dadog.com/DoggySnacks/VideoClips/VideoClips.htmAlso, I didn't realize that the paint area and baselines at the Cap Center were red, jeez, I really cant imagine us playing on a floor with red on it.

****KNICKS 81 at SPURS 99**** Sweets only plays 17 minutes and scores only 4 points and grabs 3 boards. Foul trouble appears to be a major problem for him this year as he had 4 fouls in his 17 minutes on the floor. Jerome played 14 minutes and had 6pts and 3 boards box score: www.nba.com/games/20041116/NYKSAS/boxscore.html

No Thank You. Just give Sweets some run! He got some decent run tonight, but he should still get more given what Thomas is doing. Get rid of Thomas and keep the youth. The Knicks can't afford to have a starting 5 of Allan Houstons.

I was watching on TV while trying to corral my two daughters, so I didn't see the whole thing -- including missing all 6 (!) of Sweets' minutes.
Jerome played with customary intensity in garbage time, but the game was totally out of reach before he got any minutes.
Knicks looked horrible. They made an average at best Raptors team look like all-stars -- Milt Palacio, who can't hit a jump shot in traffic but can drive, was basically allowed a path to the hoop every time down the floor.
It's going to be a sad year for the Atlantic division -- Raps, Knicks, 'Sixers, Nets all look bad.
Cheers.

As an added incentive, Dan, it should be noted that the Wizards are marketing the Knicks game with "singles night." No joke. Speed dating while the game is going on. Girls, keep your eyes open for the drunk fan who throws beer. I smell a future abusive spooouussseee.... www.nba.com/wizards/news/singles_night0405.html

Yesterday, the Knicks won their sixth home game in a row and their third overall. In addition to Marbury's stellar performance, the difference makers where none other than Jerome Williams, aka JYD, and Michael Sweetney.
Rome was especially effective, creating havoc on both ends of the court, and injecting energy into an otherwise lethargic game (probably due to both teams playing on back-to-back nights.) Williams dominated, showing acrobatic ability on the offensive end, and an uncanny ability to throw off Gasol, the Grizzlies' number one scoring threat. He finished with 9 points and 3 boards in just 17 minutes, going 4-5 from the field.
Michael Sweetney, continued to demonstrate that he should be getting more PT, putting up an impressive 10 points and 9 boards in only 21 minutes of action, including a blocked shot, going 5-10 from the field. The announcers commented that despite big Mike being only 7th on the team in terms of minutes, he was third in terms of FT attempts and also among the leaders in offensive rebounds. Being a big Knicks fan (and even bigger Hoyas fan), it is great having two of my favorite Hoyas on my team.
In trying to be objective, I will say that Kurt Thomas is having a fine season, and Nazr Mohammed is putting together a string of impressive performances, and this is in part why Sweetney is playing less than even Wilkens probably anticipated. However, I still think they need to consistently get Sweetney in for at least 10 minutes, and should really look at getting him an average of at least 20 minutes a game (currently at 17).
Given that the Knicks have Tim Thomas at small forward, and have Penny off the bench, as well as a soon-to-return Houston, I understand why they often go small, but I still think the team would be better off with a guy like Sweets, who can legitimately threaten from the low post, on the floor as much as possible.
Here's to big Mike's continued development, the JYD showing New York why his middle name is "intangible" and the ongoing success of the Knicks!
And I won't forget, GO HOYAS!!!
