I thought we played very well defensively, Miles made a few good saves for sure and played solid, but he didn't have THAT much work to do. Compare that to the Duke loss when it was only 6-4 and we led a lot of the game but poor Miles probably saved--no joke--4-5 sure goals off of backdoor feed and quick-stick chances right on his doorstep.
We're never going to be jaw-dropping offensively...I watched a Hopkins game the other weekend and was telling RusskyHoya that you can tell the difference in terms of how well Hopkins passes the ball and uses that to put pressure on the defense.
Of course, sometimes the more...ahem...direct approach is kinda fun, like when D'Agnes (pretty sure it was him) lowered his shoulder and obliterated his defender before narrowly missing a shot.
I guess it's gonna come down to...if/when we're playing in another QF this year, we're never gonna be able to "outscore" or especially come back from being down against a team with big firepower (like UVA last year). However, if we can control the tempo of a game with a deliberate but smart offense and the type of solid defense we played yesterday, creating turnovers and messing with shot attempts, we can be right there at the end (like we were against Maryland 2 years ago).
So here's my guess of what the bracket will look like in about eight hours:
#1 Cornell vs. Colgate #2 Duke vs. the St. Joe's-Providence winner #3 UVA vs. Delaware #4 Hopkins vs. UMBC #5 Georgetown vs. Loyola #6 Maryland vs. Navy #7 Albany vs. Notre Dame #8 Princeton vs. UNC
With the #1/#2 QFs in Princeton and the #3/#4 QFs in Annapolis.

I don't really see why you say Miles didn't have much work to do. His 13 saves is his highest in a single game all year, and the only other game where he had as many was 3/14 at Delaware. Also, Loyola was the only other game in the past month where our opponent put as many as 17 total shots on goal. 13 Saves on 17 SOG is terrific.

That is terrific vegas, but it defeintly didn't seem like they had that many SOG. He also may have gotten credit for the aprox. 4 shots that went of the posts. Also several of those saves he didn't even have to move on and most were routine saves. He's had other games where he had to make several spectacular saves. This wasn't one of them.

Yeah I mean that's what I'm getting at. Not that it's EVER easy to play goal in lacrosse, but each shot has a certain degree of difficulty. Penn State wasn't really testing Miles IMO to the degree that Duke did earlier in the year for instance, regardless of how many shots they put on frame. In any case, Miles has rather quietly been putting in some very impressive performances this season.

I was hoping to go to Annapolis on the 13th... Plus, why does Princeton get to play at home? One of the MD teams could have gone up there.

What is happening to the women's team. Did they just have a bad year or is the program in a secular decline due to more competition, coaching, recuiting issues? I have no idea but was curious to find out what people closer to the situation think.

The NCAA MLAX Selction Committee sticks it to us EVERY YEAR, only this year, they stuck it to SEVERAL teams. I guess it pays to be on the MLAX Committee (**cough cough** Albany). To say, as evidenced by the 3-tier Selection Criteria pasted below, that Albany has more quality wins than GU is obscene. True, they beat JHU, but they lost to BINGHAMTON? And Kevin Broadus hasn't even coached a game yet. For Albany's RPI to be better than ours (5 vs. 6) is ridiculous. We have wins over 2 Top 7 teams, and while the ECAC is not the strongest Conference out there, it is stronger than the America East.
It is my firm belief that the Committee seeds us every year to have the toughest road of any tournament team. I think part of this is that, until we win a championship (on 5/28/07), we will be on the outside of the "circle" looking in (Princeton, Duke, UVA, JHU, 'Cuse......heck, even UMD & Navy). I think teams are afraid to play us, & rightfully so, but the top half of the tournament bracket looks quite a bit softer than the bottom.
What would it take to get Coach Urick on the Committee? The 2 D1 coaches currently on are Cottle--MD, and Marr--Albany. Also, interesting to note that the ACC has representation on the Committee, but no AQ, and the ECAC has no representation at all.
Am I scared? NOT AT ALL. Am I frustrated by the annual snub? Yes.
Best thing is: we have the talent this year to run through (if seeding holds) Princeton, JHU, UVA, and Duke. That oughtta put us in the inner circle.
No Team Ranking RPI QW SOS W L 1 Duke 1 1 1 14 2 2 Virginia 4 2 3 12 3 3 Johns Hopkins 3 4 4 9 4 4 Maryland 10 7 2 10 5 5 North Carolina 7 10 5 9 5 6 Albany 5 3 17 14 2 7 Cornell 2 5 19 13 0 8 Georgetown 6 6 16 11 2

guhoyas.cstv.com/sports/m-lacros/spec-rel/050807aaa.html Here is the talent Vegasrain is talking about. Cannon is ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, Lambe is holding down the Defensive post, and Coach Urick is the Coach of the Year! Congrats Hoyas. Now let's show that selection committe exactly where we should be on that bracket.
