I think the voice might have printed the opinion of an overly mouth - and ignorant - freshman.
Do they haze frosh anymore?

Furthermore, it seems as though, in our crappy paper, at least, the focus is the Georgetown Voice. The Voice sucks, always has sucked and always will suck. We are not a school known for our publications. To be perfectly honest, the only thing that is even remotely readable is the Hoya.

I went to the GU football games as a student and really don't remember the band breaking up the fight song that way, so probably nobody ever told us, either. Glad you're getting it on the cheer sheets and maybe this info can be passed on during next year's NSO fight song lessons as well. The band has played the fight song that way as long as I can remember as well--and I was playing it that way back in 1996. I'm sure it goes back further than that. The "breaking up" actually makes sense when you remember DFW's observation that it is actually three separate songs. After the touchdown, we play the "It's been so long" bit. Then the extra point is kicked, and we pick it up with the next part. In my day, we used to then repeat back to the "it's been so long" but at double time or something pathetically trying to approximate it (note: alcohol + cold + 25 musicians doesn't really work well ). That was dropped around my senior year when the Fight Song was rearranged (musically) and the double time thing was just scrapped. So yeah, there's a logic to it. Other schools just fill the post-TD, pre-extra point with something else. Here, we weave our fight song into it. The band's done the Fight Song that was as long as I've been going to football games (since 2000-2001)--unless I'm crazy or forgetful. Of course the thing is, how many students were really there TO NOTICE in the first place. And it's not like the atmosphere at our football games has ever gotten to the point of "people doing stuff or singing stuff". Lots of great points in this thread. I agree with everything TBird said especially...although I wonder if anybody's thought to notice how often (or not) students read the cheer sheets HB's put out at games over the years.

I think it is a wonderful idea that Hoya Blue has the Fight Song embedded into their home page. That seems to be a great way to raise the profile of the song.
And, it's only 93 seconds long.

someone asked about when the fight song was first strung together as it is today... i couldnt find it online anywhere, but the "legend" as i heard it is that the chimes were invited to perform on the tonight show with johnny carson back in the 50s. he asked them to perform the our school fight song, as apparently was the custom of other a cappella groups who'd recently come onto the national scene. but we didnt really have one- save for the alma mater... rather than turn down carson, the chimes strung together three of the various cheers/songs that were popular on campus into the current, multi-verse version we all (or MOST of us know and love today. strangely enough... none of this is mentioned on the chimes web site, so im not really sure if its true or urban legend. but its fun gtown trivia nevertheless This may be urban legend. Steve Allen hosted the Tonight Show in the 1950's, not Johnny Carson. Johnny wasn't the host until 1962.--Admin

Just read the article. I am sorry to report that this student is not a freshman. He is in fact a member of the class of 2007. That's right, this is his third year here and he is still unable to memorize a few lines. Note to Hoya Blue: maybe as we try to get everyone to learn and sing the fight song, we should probably explain the words that are put together in an "unnatural wedlock". I have actually looked into what the words mean and maybe they should be explained. Maybe next year, we can hand out papers with the fight song and its historical and linguistic explanation during the first NSO McDonough meeting.

I talked to The Voice and hear are some suggestions/problems that they have with the fight song:
1) Have Hot Hot Heat or some unknown Euro-band that only The Voice could like write a new fight song
2) Too much mentioning of the word "Hoya" not enough of the word "Voice"
3) No mention of the corrupt oil hording politics of the Bush administration
4) No mention of the living wage campaign
5) Not nearly as innane and annoying enough as The Voice itself
6) Sounds arrogant and self-aggrandizing and yet wasn't written by The Voice's editorial board.

Unfortunately, I know the poor sap that wrote this article. As much as it shames me to say it, he was in my high school graduating class. Instead of bitching about our horrible fight song that nobody knows - maybe he should have gone to the football game Saturday where 40 shirtless dudes in the rain sang it with the entire Georgetown football team (which, of course, totally sucks by the way) - how bout offering something constructive, as in how to make it better. Also, how bout doing a little research: we play Cornell this weekend, and we haven't always sucked at football. That's just embarassing. Lastly, I hope some football players read this, get Editeded, look him up and beat the crap out of him, or at least give him a good scare. Those football players practice for hours every day. No matter what the results (and 3-3 ain't bad), how bout a little respect. If I think an on-campus group sucks (not to mention any names, but the Hoya Dance team...), I wouldn't go out and print that in an article. That's just stupid, disrespectful, unprofessional, not good journalism, and again, not constructive. I hope he gets some good hate mail about this. Anybody sent any letters yet? P.S. As an entertainment writer for The Hoya, I don't despise The Voice as much as others in my vein, although we are definitely far superior in just about every way.

I love the fight song as is...
Any University with a lot of spoiled rich kids throwing cash at sports gambling needs to mention it in the song...

Dante's email for anyone that is interested...
Edited. The board has a policy against posting someone else's e-mail or phone number without consent. Contact the poster directly if you want to discuss this offline.--Admin

is there a difference between a policy and a rule? i don't see this policy posted anywhere on the message board rules - besides Dante's email is readily available on the gusa website gusa.georgetown.edu/members/index.htmlLinking to the GUSA web site is appropriate. However, due to problems experienced when people were posting personal e-mails and phone numbers to call during Craig's last days, such direct links are not appropriate. This personal information is reflected on #12 of the board rules. --Admin

Just be glad that you don't have to listen to the worst sound ever at a football game... and that would be the Tennessee band playing relentlessly you-know-what...

sorry for the misunderstanding - i thought the personal information in rule 12 applied to "fellow posters, Georgetown players, coaches, recruited student-athletes, or athletics staff" not the staff of the Georgetown Voice. I stand corrected.

I can only assume that "Tommy Trojan" is kidding. He must obviously know that the worst noise at a football game is "Conquest." Over and over and over... "This is the only song we know...."
