Posted by: lichoya68 Posted on: 01/11/2005 at 23:53:56 yes jt3 takes revenge for the father and stealing patricks championship didnot we beat nova by 20 and 20 and 20 or so that year in the bigeast twice in the season and maybe once in the tourney wow would be nice revenge to show we are georgetown and we are really back go hoyas beat nova *********************** lic, We beat Nova twice that year during the regular season, but both were pretty close games. The 1985 final was a fluke and a painful pill to swallow -- Jensen kissing those balls off the glass, etc. -- but I'll give Snowdog's boys their due. Great effort by them against a juggernaut. That said, I would love for JT3 to put a damper on their party this weekend.
Nevada and Jack, the "Manley Fieldhouse is officially closed" is one of my favorite JT lines. Awesome stuff. I recall leaving the Dome after watching the Hoyas lose to the Orange -- I think in the game involving the non-sensical Sam Jefferson foul on Billy Owens from 40 feet away. The Cuse fans were yelling at a buddy, painted up somewhat like 007 and crew, "Where are you going now, Hoyyyaaa?!" as we exited the arena. It caught the attention of the crowd and more chanted it. He paused, looked right at the loudest guy and calmly replied, "I'm heading back to the City (NY), but first I'm going to P*SS on Manley Fieldhouse (again)." Utterly silenced them. It was still a painful wound a decade later.

At Nova, 52-50 (OT). At Home, 57-50.
How in the heck did we have a two game losing streak that season? ;D

At Nova, 52-50 (OT). At Home, 57-50. How in the heck did we have a two game losing streak that season? ;D Simple, SU at the Dome is always tough and Pearl always saved his best for the Hoyas. That was a 1-2 point loss. SJU, which always played GU better at Cap Centre than MSG, streaked to a big lead; the Hoyas rushed back but came up 1 point short. That was the only loss to SJU out of 4 games that year and I believe those 3 GU losses were the only losses SJU suffered that year....

It was just weird to have seen the only two regular season losses be back to back. You guys are so lucky to have been fans back then.
The press must've loved four games between SJU and GU.

It was just weird to have seen the only two regular season losses be back to back. You guys are so lucky to have been fans back then. The press must've loved four games between SJU and GU. More memories for SF's benefit: The first SJU game at Cap Centre was, ahem, sold out and the crowd was very much into it. At that point, SJU might have been #2 and GU was #1 although ready to drop since they'd lost to Cuse in the Dome. Earlier that year, GU had a #1-2 matchup when they dispatched #2 DePaul at Cap Centre by 20 points! The second SJU game was the famous sweater game when JT showed up in an exact replica of Louie's sweater and revealed as he took the bench on the Garden floor!! The NY and national press went nuts for that game and GU manhandled the Johnnies; it was televised locally on Channel 5, I believe (and nationally on ESPN of course). I recall Reggie shooting the lights out in that game. The sweater helped diffuse/take away a lot of hostility in the Garden that night.... The third SJU match-up was the BE final with similar results. Hoyas dominated start to finish and Ewing was particularly intimidating with a reverse slam over Wennington. The fourth SJU was the Final Four semifinal and Wingate, Williams, Martin, Broadnax and anybody else that was assigned to do so shut down Mullin. I don't keenly remember the two regular season games with Nova (other than recalling before the Final that they had played GU tough). The OT game was pretty much back and forth. Two years earlier, Pinckney played the game of his life at the Palestra, scoring 27 and rebounding 22 caroms (!) in edging GU (Nova's only lead of the game came at the very end in pulling off the upset; I do remember Nova getting some home-cooked meals from the refs in that game!). What people forget about in the 85 Final was that GU was up by 1 with about 4-5 minutes to go and had the ball. JT called a kind of delay/4-corners type offense to look for an easy basket while milking clock. Broadnax had the ball on the perimeter and threw a bounce/low pass to Martin on the right sideline which bounced off his knee and was snapped up by Nova. That turnover threw the momentum back to the Cats and the rest was history (I'm pretty sure Jensen hit a deep j on that possession)....

Thanks, Wilson. I have to admire any fan that went from three FF in four years yet stayed a fan during last five.

In my case, unfortunately, performance on the court has little correlation with the intensity/persistence of fandom!! Hoyadom is apparently endemic to/for me, as an alum!!

In the Finals in 85, I remember being more afraid of Nova, than the usual bball fan (who almost conceded the game to the Hoyas). I had known that Nova had played two tough games against the Hoyas that year, and it is always hard to beat a bitter rival three times in one year without a loss.

I, too, date from that era of Hoya basketball. Though I neither attended GU nor currently live in the area, through the Board my interest in the Hoyas has remained strong. It certainly helped get me through the Dark Days. So thanks, WBH, et al, though I admit I miss the more "uncensored discussion" on the old board. Some of those catfights were legendary ;D.

It has just been revealed that Jason Fraser has a hand injury that requires surgery and will miss the Villanova game. Expect VU players to "shoot up" during the pregame festivities to honor the 1985 team.
