The year is the 25th anniversary of the Big East and therefore the indoor track and field meet. As the previous 24 sessions, this meet will be held in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The Miami women and the Notre Dame men are the defending champions. Georgetown has won its share of the meets and should be in the hunt again. The meet is to be held this Saturday and Sunday, so I will be reporting the results here as soon as I get them. In the past the meet has been on the internet, but I have yet to see a link to live coverage.

Both the men's and the women's team were 3rd in the BE meet last year. This year the women are ranked 20th in the nation in the indoor track poll.

Nevada,
I seem to remember us picking up some new recruits (frosh this year) in some of the field events, and maybe a decathlete. How have they been working out so far? Any signs that those additions in depth will help us in the meet?

TrueBlue,
We picked up Danny Pellegrino last year. He is a pole vaulter, plus does the multi-events. He finished in the top 5, maybe 3rd last year in the BE meet in the PV, but I have not seen his name in any of the results this year. We have another pole vaulter, Andrew Haskell, but he is about a foot behind what Danny was doing last year (15'3" vs 16'2" ). So I don't know about Danny. Either he is redshirting or went back to Florida (couldn't take the winters). We have Teddy Pressley in the jumps, but he has not shown that he is ready to replace Davin Williams, who won both the LJ and TJ last year in the BE. No weight guys this year. I think most of the men's recruits this year were runners. There are a couple of frosh women, who do the jumps, but not the weight events.

Thanks Nevada. Davin was a great jumper and a great guy. I roomed with him (randomly) one summer when we were both in GU housing.

Neat! I wish we had him back this year, as his 20 points are going to be hard to replace. We were a close 3rd, about 7 points from ND, which won. I don't know if we have the depth that we had last year, as far as quality scorers in different events.

A couple of thoughts:
1) I believe the Hoya Men have won more indoor BE titles than any other school in the history of the BE Indoor Track Championships.
2) It's pretty difficult to practice field events with the lack of facilities. When you think of what a Nationally respected program we have with the lack of facilities it makes one even more proud of what we can accomplish.
3) Both teams had some great individual performances at the Armory last weekend, here's wishing luck to both the Men and Women Hoyas this weekend and hope they both have great team efforts.

On a track-related note, I was sad to read that Southern Methodist University is dropping its track and cross country programs.
For those that remember names like Michael Carter and the great SMU field athletes of the 1970's and 1980's, it's another blow to T&F at the college level. SMU earlier dropped baseball and has just seven men's sports left.

It is sad that SMU dropped it men's program. As recently as 8 years ago, they won the NCAA. With Title IX enforcement, the track programs are often on the chopping block. In Nevada, for example, neither UNLV nor Reno have a men's program, so if the local HS boys want to run, they have to run out of state, which, if you are not national class and could get a full ride, will cost them a lot of tuition money, while giving up their cheap (or free with a B average) instate tuition.
Yes, the Hoyas track and field team are to be admired with the lack of facilities. And yes, the Hoyas (men at least) have won about 11 of the 24 BE meets. It is going to hard to win this year, as I don't believe they have the depth. They might score a bit more at the NCAAs, but the BE might be hard with what they have.
In the past two or three years, the BE meet has been shown live on the internet, but not this year. Also, the heat entries are up now, but no actual results yet.

Okay, first reports from the BE meet are trickling in. Women's results only so far. In qualifying Monica Hargrove qualified for the finals in the 200m and 500m runs, with a 24>53 and 1:16.48, respectively. Kandance Ferguson ran the 400 m and finished 9th, just out of the qualifiers in 57.25, while Jayne Penn also was 9th and didn't qualify in 1:17.35. After two scored events (the weight throw and Pentathlon) we haven't scored (which is not so surprising).

thanks for the updates! Sounds like GU had a pretty solid showing on day one. One question: where did Chris Lukezic finish in his individual event(s)? I see that he helped the team to finish 2nd in the DMR, but didnt see him anywhere else. I read the article in Runners' World that you posted earlier and am interested in hearing how he did. Looking forward to hearing about tomorrow's success...

Chris is running in the mile tomorrow. I think they just have a final in that event. From the look of the field he is probably one of the favorites. He will probably run in the 4x800m also, as he did a sub-1:50 relay leg in HS (when his HS set the national record).
Incidentally, most of UConn's points came in the pole vault and weight throws (35/50).

You're welcome. The remaining major indoor meets are the IC4As and the NCAAs. We might do pretty well at these, as we have some quality performers, plus top relay teams.
