No whites in the CBC. No blacks in the Klu Klux Klan (except Clayton Bigsby). No women in Augusta. No shirt, no shoes, no service. No sex in the champagne room. This is America. Exclusion is what we do best. That, and really bad music. Have you ever actually listened to Toby Keith?!? Yikes... Whoa, there....let's keep this civil. Under Section IV.3.2.8(a)iii of the Patriot Act, by disparaging Toby Keith you have committed an offense punishable by 3- years at Guantanamo Bay. As a citizen of the U.S. it is less likely that you're stay will extend to , but is literally what it says in the code -- late amendment by Gonzo and the boys at Justice. Anyhow, to be safe, I'd lay off the Country and Western talent. Rumor has it a Chesney comment gets you hanged (...no, hung...er, wait, hunged...hanging?).

I thought Congress was the "white caucus?" ;-)
Seriously, if congressfolk want to start a "white caucus," by all means go ahead. I'm sure it'll work PR wonders.
And yes, I've had many non-black friends attend Howard. All reports I've heard is that they had very positive experiences. Though I think the general point of the original poster is correct, schools like Howard/Gaulladet were created to try to help its primary community.

My daughter, who is white, attended Howard University. An older brother of a girl I went to HS with (he was in my Scout troop and I helped on his Eagle project) went to Howard Law on a minority scholarship. He's white too.

Toby Keith may suck (as does all country music in my opinion), but he gets to go on tour and share a bus with this: tinyurl.com/yqhg7dWho do you get to go on tour and share a bus with, huh?

A friend of mine who is a big TK fan says he is actually a liberal Democrat, but just thinks people like the Dixie Chicks shouldn't "air the nation's dirty laundry." If true, that would be really funny.

Thanks to those who pointed out how typically fallacious and simplistic the Galludet/Howard analogy really is. Those schools could not and do not restrict based upon race and/or physical capacity.
I assume the CBC uses federal funds in some capacity (office space, staff, etc.). Do we not have a problem here?
Finally, if private clubs can be foreced to integrate, why not the public trough?

Riiight... "typically fallacious and simplistic"... kind of like arguing that excluding white members from the Black[/i] Caucus is discrimination. Just face it, the way the caucus system works in Congress is to group together Members that have similar backgrounds and interests so that they can have meetings and agree to support or reject proposed bills. There is nothing sinister going on here when they decide to limit their membership to Members who are actually black!

So you would have no issue with a caucus of only male members of Congress or a caucus which excludes women?
If so, we have no argument.

So you would have no issue with a caucus of only male members of Congress or a caucus which excludes women? If so, we have no argument. Sure, I don't think that would be an issue. Although again, like your "white caucus" argument, I would like to know what issues that a men's caucus would address. The point of a Women's and Black caucus is to deal with the inequalities present in our society. However, I could maybe see an all men's coalition to promote legislation to fight prostate or testicular cancer or something like that. I still think you are missing the point with the purpose of a women's or black caucus. What might help is to say that I hope one day that these Caucuses will be unnecessary. Once there is true equality in our society, then you will be right and groups with a racial or gender identity won't have a reason to exist anymore. I agree with you that true equality means that someone who is white should not be considered any different than a person who is black. However, our society is not at that point yet. I would argue that the Black Caucus is needed to protect minority interest in Congress and bring society closer to eliminating the need to have such a caucus.

I think we basically agree on where this should end. My point is simply that there would be widespread outrage if a black member of Congress had been excluded from any group simply based upon his race. Likewise if a woman were excluded.
I can't help but think that the CBC would provide a great example of the society we strive for if it had said, "sure happy to have you".

He pulled a Biden on me and took away the key component to my own platform when I announce for President...

None of us on this board will ever be President. But, I think Jonathan Wallace might be. (Unless of course G. Michael keeps calling him Jonathan Edwards, that might jinx it)
