Re. syllabus online: procrastinating faculty, like yours truly, are more fairly blamed than the administration. Every semester during pre-registration we get notes from the registrar and/or the provost encouraging us to post our syllabus online. Fair enough. It's not as much that I blame the administration as I want them to push the faculty into having a more open process during class selection time. I just wish that the administration (or the faculty) would do more to actually showcase their upcoming classes. I hate having to rely on word-of-mouth or ratemyprofessors for all my predictions about how a class is going to be. In addition, this means that most people have no idea of the emphasis of a specific class. For instance, History classes (or any basic level classes) taught by different professors will have different emphases and that would be information that I would like to weigh into my class decision. More information for the student during this phase can only help, both for the professors and for the students. In my mind, there must be some way to have at least a bigger synopsis than the one under the class description. I mean, just having the previous year's syllabus in most classes would probably be close to fine, but I can't even find that for a number of my classes. Some don't even have any type of description.
