Is that the Duke Ellington track (rounder than a normal track) north of the campus? I dont know if that is the Duke Ellington track but I was up there about a week ago and I was wondering why we havent made us of an open field right across the street from campus. It seems crazy that we can't come up with some deal with the community to put a nice track up there. I dont know if its big enough for a regulation size track though, Nevada would have to provide those details.

The Ellington Field (formerly Firebird Stadium, where UDC's D-II football team once played, and before that Western High School Stadium) land is owned by the D.C. school district and any proposed changes have been tied up in municipal red tape for a number of years.
The track is not a regulation size. The oval is just under 1/5 of a mile.

The neighborhood folks are PSYCHOTIC about that field. Friend of mine lived on 38th/T area last year and some other friends felt like playing football and we went there. We're there 10 minutes--haven't even started playing yet--and this neighborhood czar-type older guy comes over and goes nuclear on us. We would have gotten away with the deniability of none of us go to GTown, but actually JoeHoya was wearing a shirt with something really obvious on it, so that lie didn't work. And he lectured us about how GTown sucks for not giving us playing fields and he'd be darned if he was gonna let us use his...well, actually, he relented after stressing angrily that they don't have insurance, blah blah blah. They definitely use that field for something during the year--either practice for some minor HS sport, or rec league soccer on the weekends. So it's taken...DON'T even think GU kids are gonna get that with any regularity.

What do you mean by "original" football field? THE original football field was of course on what is now Copley Lawn before Copley was there and streching through the ground currently occupied by White-Gravenor. Previous to Kehoe... the track/field in the Exorcist that I was told was there before Yates.

Oh yeah, in the exorcist it looks like the field is where Kehoe is now, but there was no Yates yet, it was just a little hilltop.

It was the same place as the current Kehoe field, just at a lower (non-roofed) elevation.
The movie also features the Georgetown tennis courts where Village A (in its 26th year of waiting for a naming gift) now sits.

The story was that it was to be named "Carrollton" (as in John Carroll's family home) but Georgetown pulled it back for a naming gift that never arrived.
Alumni Square was once known as Village B until those gifts came along, and apparently no one stepped forward for Village C.
(For a while, I was worrying the SW Quad would become D, E, and F.)

hahahaha, was it really supposed to be named something and they never got an offer? hahahaha What about Village C, did it ever get a name or did they leave it at Village C? You could tell the naming thing was prevalent when alot of buildings were built. I figured it out on the ICC facade - just look at the different style letters between Father Bunn's name and the words Intercultural Center.

Village C is still Village C. And nobody ever uses the term "Alumni Square." It's still called Village B by all the students, even if it's been renamed. On the topic of having nowhere to play pickup football: my friends and I were playing softball on top of Yates today, and got kicked off for a soccer clinic for 8 year old girls, not because we were in the way, as they weren't going to need the whole field, but because, "It looks bad" to have students playing pickup sports.

I just loved the astroturf on top of Yates in '92-'93 timeframe. I only had to go to a month or two of therapy for that (nothing was torn, just strained when I was playing pickup football on it one night.) Running suicides on it was fun too.

I lived in Village C and I liked it and all, but I think Pope John Paul II is deserving of something nicer on campus being named after him.

I was giving a GAAP dorm tour last week, and a parent asked if they would have to pay the same rate for housing if their kid was in VCW as they would have to pay if he was put in Harbin. I agree that the late pope deserves better than VC.

Oh man, the astroturf up there sucks big time. I mean, it's soft enough, but the needles of "grass" are so sharp you can do some serious damage to yourself. We've had some intramural softball games up there (we actually won our championship game today in extra innings, ;D). Let's just say do not slide up there, especially while wearing shorts. There will be blood, and some ugly looking scars. CTHoya08, that sucks they kicked you off there. "Looks bad." Haha, ridiculous. I'd have stayed, they have no right to kick you off.

My roommate slid on the turf in our intramural game about 6 weeks ago, and still hasn't fully healed yet.
