The D's season would have been a lot better had they not been on the field so long game in and game out. I think the final stats will show that Davidson still won the TOP (if it's close, they effectively did because the Hoyas got a lot of extra time as Davidson kept forcing things and turning it over as the game wound down).
If you're left out there long enough, eventually a team's going to expose your weaknesses.
All things being equal, however, Ononibaku and Buzbee make a great pair of rush ends, no? Those two seem to get to the QB every game. I'm glad they'll be returning next season.

agreed. this D, if it had a better O to complement it, would have probably been the 2nd best in the PL behind Leh. our D ends are the best combo in the PL.

Every year, it seems our Hoya football team is an enigma. But this year in particular one thing is especially strange: our inability to play a close game! We either get blown out or blow the other team out, the latter happening quite more often. The closest game this year was our 17-6 loss to Lafayette. The Bucknell decision, 35-19, was close at one point in the third quarter, but ended up being a blowout. I'm not sure what this means, but all in all, great game on all levels today, especially of course, our Tenacious D ( ). Let's finish it off with a home win over Holy Cross at Harbin a week from now. We were the only team they beat last year, it's payback time, boys.

CAHoya--
It means we are really bad. VMI os 0-10. St. Francis is 235 in the Sagarin rankings and Davidson is 236. We havent played a close game against the others because they are all in the top 200. Our wins do not mean anything. In fact, 21-0 against VMI and 23-0 against Davidson are pretty embarrassing offensive performances considering the D's they played.

First off Congrats to the players on a win, regardless of who they played because they don't make their own schedule they just play it. I don't want to rain on the parade but guest is right, padding the schedule with terrible non conference games just gives you meaningless wins. The players don't grow and the team doesn't get any meaningful experience against good competition that will ultimately help them develop and become better players

Thanks for the info though. I didn't realize that we were THAT bad, that the only games we can win are meaningless, although I kinda had a hunch. I bet you the athletic department schedules these games so that our team salvages a myth of SOME respectability. Pretty depressing, but I still hope we can knock off Holy Cross next week to avoid putting up the big goose egg in Patriot League play. Otherwise, it's basically a winless season for us. Lastly, where did you get the Sagarin rankings for DI-AA? How many teams overall in DI-AA, and where are we, and our upcoming foe Holy Cross, ranked in the whole mix?

Like most, I had to listen to the game on the Davidson radio/internet broadcast... complete with ads for a local travel agency and mortuary... Good game, wish I could have been there... and, well written recap on the main page...

The players don't grow and the team doesn't get any meaningful experience against good competition that will ultimately help them develop and become better players I just cannot agree with Rome on this point. The wins are not meaningless. Every game has it's own lessons. Sometimes, playing a "lessor" team (although it seems our records were similar going into this game) can allow GT to gain a measure of confidence in working as a unit. While you would like that confidence building to come in the beginging of the season, every opportunity we have to build our players as a team is, in my mind, welcome. I agree that the development of good players is a direct function of playing with good teammates, having good coaching and playing against good competition. Achievement in that mix, however, also requires success to develop some PMA. I will take the win over Davidson, congratulate the players and coaches, and look forward to a win against Holy Cross.

Good Comments Michigan Dad... I'm sure Davidson played to win on Saturday, just ask our guys how hard the hits were along the line of scrimmage... did you notice that their quarterback was the son of Bert Jones, a great competitor... I'm sure that some of the curious posts on this site are made by football fans that grew up watching the game on tv, and never felt a hit on Saturday... I think they would appreciate the beauty of the teamwork more, and the contribution the coaches make preparing our guys for each game. Don't take Holy Cross for granted... it's their last game of the season too, last game for their seniors... and an opportunity for their coaches and team to finish the season with respect...

While I wish we had a win over a PL contender, I can only imagine the comments on this board if we had not beaten the teams we did. The one that still hurts (I saw it in person) was Duquesene. I can understand losing to the Patriot League teams...but that one was sad. My suspicion or hunch is that Georgetown is improving marginally, but that the entire Patriot League is improving also. Colgate's run in the playoffs last year might bear that out...I will be interested to see how Lehigh does this year.
Now, from the "Looking for the silver lining" file, I offer the following:
1) Two of three touchdowns on Saturday were scored by a freshman...a freshman who has been our second most productive RB this season
2) The kicker in Saturday's win was a freshman. Yes, he missed an XP, but he hit a FG while the game was scoreless and it was his first appearance ever at this level.
3) Our leading receiver on Saturday (and the player who brought back the kickoff for a TD vs. Lehigh) is a freshman.
The fact that Buzbee and Ono are returning is well known and they will be backed by almost all of the current LBs. I'm not the blind optimist here, but I think this program is closer than some may believe. Boy, I hope I'm not deluding myself!

LBpop you are not deluding yourself. The coaches were talking at the end of spring last year and they were really happy with our incoming class. What we need to keep in mind is that we are losing a huge number of starters for next year. Let's hope that the new guys are at least up to par with the seniors.
