"The 6-foot-8 Mescheriakov was not paid while playing for a professional team in his native Belarus before moving to the United States, but his participation is still a violation of NCAA rules. "
That's Bull! He wasn't even a recruit when this happened how can he be penalized when he hadn't even enrolled in college yet? That makes no sense.

Why would you think this? What benefit would the program gain from that? I'm not a huge redshirting fan, personally, and it almost never happens anyway. But, the benefit would be, if you thought Nikita could be a real contributor (in the main rotation) by junior year, you could get three good years out of him. He'd have experience and maybe less worries about PT than the seven McD's AAs around him. Moving him into the '08 class doesn't help class balance, tho. . The way JTIII is recruiting he will be surrounded by McDAA every year. Don't redshirt him. He's a gifted offensive player and I want to see him get a few minutes per game (or every other game).

His chances for PT are very low now that he would be eligible once the BE starts. I hope he's talented enough to get 2-3 mins per.

As long as he can keep practicing he'll be fine. A setback would be if he was injured. III makes his assessment based upon what people do in practice. I've been told that's why some former players never got much time on the floor.

Yeah, I think he mentioned that in one of Q&A's with the students.

Oh, I agree with not redshirting. Just pointing out that there is an argument for it.

I'm really pulling for him, and I hope this doesn't set him back too much.

The NCAA are a funny bunch of squirrels. No perspective at all. A pro team in Belarus. Isn't that like being the 5th most famous celebrity in Khazakhstan?

I couldn't help but chuckle when I saw this. Esp since it's above Modano setting the U.S.-born scoring mark.

ESPN does not mention whether he is or is not on scholarship.

I was on the NBA page of realgm.com and it had this story as one of its wire headlines. So funny.
