"75Zag"s post on the Gonzaga board is hilarious. Must read. "I am starting to warm up to the Catholics Only Conference (COC) idea. If named as commissioner of the new COC league, I can offer the following brainstorming ideas:
Cheerleaders dressed as members of the College of Cardinals? Communion in the stands at half time? Instead of athletic shoes, the players must wear sandals like Jesus did? Concession stands sell loaves and fishes only, plus cups of water? (water into wine conversions subject to local liquor regulations) Personal fouls categorized as either venial (one shot) or mortal (two shots)? Players called for technical fouls required to particpate in confession / reconcilliation sacrament before returning to the playing floor?
Just getting started . . .
Go Bulldogs!" ;D ;D

By getting away from the Syracuses and UConns of the world, we will certainly be rivals with a better class of fans, if nothing else...

What a weird thread, xband01.
Admittedly, I only read a few pages at the end, so maybe it's simply devolved, but:
a) There's no real chance Xavier is not invited. I really can't see that. And it certainly isn't Xavier or Gonzaga.
b) Some of the suggestions are amazingly bat crazy. The Big East has no interest in re-creating the A-10 level of competition. I expect this to stay pretty small, but even if it goes to fourteen or something, there's no place for weak programs (which is why I'd say 12 is my max).

I love that they are already bashing Seton Hall, its like they are already in the conference! Yep. General vibe is that they think they will be the Big Dog in the new conference, and some are questioning whether the collective C7 is good enough for them. Should make for a great rivalry going forward. I still hate them for beating us in the 1990 tourney.

Was disappointed to see almost universal disdain for our league on the Memphis board. Was wishing and hoping it'd be more 50/50 on whether or not to abandon hope for a good football team in order to play better hoops.

If you look at the C 7 there are only two teams who have been consistently good over the past few years--Hoyas and Marquette, possibly Nova. I am happy for the departure from the football domination, but anyone who thinks that the C 7 is a strong basketball conference at the outset, that is pure fantasy. This new conference has lost Memphis, Cincy, Temple and UConn. Thus far they are talking about replacements who are at best equals to that group. No one I have spoken to is dazzled by anyone in the C 7 except for the Hoyas and Marquette. We are starting a new conference and the est will be the quality of recruits attracted.

Not surprised, just discouraged. To be fair though, lots of people on that board were looking forward to the Tranny conference of the best MWC and Big East schools, which would have better bball and football options then we could offer but would be just as susceptible to being picked apart as the old big east was.

Butler, Xavier, Nova all have better track records in the last ten years than 3 of those programs. That's great that no one you have spoken to has been dazzled, and no, there's no perennial national title contender in the bunch, but it's just as good as group as what's left in the BE, frankly. Probably better on average.

WE need to be that program who is a perennial contender....I would say top 10 the last 6 years is on its way to that.....we need to make another big run in the tourney.

They see what we have lost and the replacement candidates are considered mid-majors, notwithstanding their success. No one is happier than I'm to be done with football, but it will be an uphill battle and the fact remains that the recent history of 4 of the C 7 programs is not distinguished. Additionally, it is one thing recruiting kids to play the former Big East and another trying to recruit to play Creighton, Xavier, Butler, etc. It will take time for this new league to build credibility.

No one has really gotten how bad whats left of the Big East conference is going to be going forward. UConn/Cincy aren't long term candidates to stay. That leaves two legit bball programs, and a lot of RPI drainers. People also aren't taking into account how bad the replacement candidates are out there if Tulane was getting an invite-
Now, if the MWC and the Big East get together in all sports, then theyd have a point, but all i've seen on that front is one speculative article.

Four of the seven programs aren't distinguished recently? That's true, I suppose. Kinda true of the ACC as well.
40% of our conference will have been to the Final Four in the 2000s. Yes, there's a perception issue. We just have to work against it -- and our own fans claiming that Villanova or Butler aren't good programs isn't going to help.

Sfhoya- agreed all around. I feel like some people on this board think if we just wait a few months we will nab duke, unc, and kentucky. Some people just are not dealing with reality yet. If the acc implodes and duke and wake etc start looking for a hoops driven conf- we will hopefully and likely get a call. No need to waste time worrying about that now, we need to skim the cream from the best non fbs leagues. And as you say, probably stop slating our own teams at this point. Plenty of others will do that for us.

Saw the traffic coming from here and thought I would sign up. Everything sounds like Butler is in. We are all extremely excited about it. My preference is to keep the league small enough for a round robin so we get to everyone at Hinkle each season. Hopefully this thing gets done soon.
