Have Vaughn and Sims been on the floor together for a single minute this year?
It's definitely possible that I missed it, but I can't recall seeing them out there at the same time.
I understand that Sims is Vaughn's backup and they play a similar role, but it does seem a little strange to me that we would not at least try putting them out there at the same time, especially given our problems with interior defense.
Thoughts on this?

I wouldn't mind seeing it in certain situations. <sighs at a memory from 1989>

I wanted this with Roy and Macklin, and Greg and Henry. It just doesn't happen for some reason.

I would think this would be our preferred zone defense. henry in the middle, JV on 1 wing, Hollis on the other, Free and Chris up top. That would be a long, long defense.
I think we are going to need JV and sims for offense though vs cuse and their zone.

The last 2 years Henry was mostly brought into game to play big forward. I think this was why he made most of his mistakes. He is a center period. He is not Monroe and can not do the things offensively a Big forward needs to do in this system to be effective. Would have liked to have seen Monroe and Sims in at same time last year with Monroe at 4 and Henry at 5 but it did not happen much if at all. Do not , repeat do not put Henry in with Vaughn because Vaughn can only play the center position also, so Sims would be forced to play the 4 position, where he is least capable.,

Honestly none of our bits are that good. Does it really matter which big lays with which big. They are all average at best. We are a guard centric team. I Think the better question is how do we get vee more minutes. Four guard offense.

Lol at the thought of Julian Vaughn attempting to guard a wing...did any of you see how fast Moore went by him last night?

The problem with a 4-guard offense is the resulting 4-guard defense - we have enough trouble with our 3-guard defense at times.

The only way I ever see JV and Henry together is against a team with 2 bigs, for example Syracuse if Jackson and Melo are both in, neither of whom has range beyond 3 feet. Then we not only might get away with 2 big guys, we might actually need them both to be able to guard the 2 opposing big men.

That kind of thing happens when you are rushing out to stop the 3 from the center position instead of being in wing defensive position from the start. That said, Bilas was right that he didn't close out the baseline when he did so.

Against the 'Cuse and certain others with multiple inside-oriented big men, I'd see it being more for blocking out and preventing the offensive rebound/easy putback than for defending two bigs in the paint at once (since that offensive strategy clogs the lane and rarely works). Of course, if there's a situation where two opposing bigs have a game outside of 6 feet, defensive matchups could be more relevant.

CO wrote up the lineups here and found that JV and HS haven't played together. My quick analysis of the small sample size -- the defense is much better with Henry in there. And when JV is overmatched offensively (against anyone taller than him), Henry needs to be playing the majority of minutes.

I think JV will be ok, my only question is he seems to gas fairly quickly during games. Hope he improves his conditioning because we're going to need him during the season.
